Hello,
I'm interested in purchasing the Maz 38 Sr. but I'm a little confused as to whether to get the head/cab or the combo upset. Can everyone tell me whether there are advantages over one or the other. I also have placed an order for the Landgraff DO pedal that I'm hoping will work well with it. Secondly, I'm completely aware that Dr. Z produces great amps, but as for this particular model, I was told that it is considered to be a versatile amp for different styles. If you have this amp, please share your experiences and knowledge. Thank for replying.

First thing most people think is less weight or feeling more balanced when they have an item in each hand. Anyway, beyond that the head I think is the way to go. When you first get a combo it's bliss and honey moon period and all, but as time goes on or as a gig may require something more or something less, or you hear or borrow someone elses speakers you really like etc etc. I find myself saying head for total versatility of dealing with all the variables down the road. Just my opinion of course.

Hey, I am a newbie here too. welcome welcome
The initial cost of a head and cabinet versus the same components in a combo is more. Subsequent acquisitions even that differential out quickly when say you want to try a new head and do not have to buy speakers to go with it. Likewise, you can experiment with speaker cabinets without buying a new amp. It gets really sweet when you have several of each. You can do the, "No honey, that is not new, I have had that amp for ages". Kidding, of course. SWMBO has her toys and I have mine. But... something to think about. If you never want more than one or two amps and you never want to carry them around a lot, combos are nice. I prefer those extra heavy AlNiCo speakers. Lugging around a combo with an extra 60 pounds of speakers in the same box is not my idea of fun.
The native here are extra friendly and the wealth of knowledge and experience is vast. You can spend a day or two reading the archives, excellent stuff.

It's more versatile to have a head/cab setup. If you want a 1X12 for a weekend gig and a 2X12 the next weekend ya just grab the appropriate cab and amp and go. I'm currently turning my last combo into a head, I don't think I'll buy another combo for a long, long time.

I just love it. If you have 2 or 3 amps of the same kind you're home free.
