Myles, heard you were the man to ask this:
I have a KT-45 that I love love love. It has (I believe) a solid state rectifier and I've been thinking about chaning it to a tube rectifier to get a little more 'give' if that's the right word. Have you played a KT-45 both ways (ss and tube rec) and if so, what are the differences/is it hard to do (I'd have a tech do it)/do you recommend the change?
thanks very much.

The SS rectifier is tighter. I don't like it as much myself. I prefer the 5AR4 rectifier.
It is a direct plug in ... takes a few seconds .... and since you are going from SS to tube if the bias was properly set you would not even need to change the bias.

Thanks Myles. So where do I get one of these, and what is it I'm actually getting, just the tube itself?

Yes, just a 5AR4 Rectifier tube. Try Mike @ KCNOS, he'll take care of you.

Thanks I'll get in touch with him. Do I just take the old one out and replace it?

Thanks I'll get in touch with him. Do I just take the old one out and replace it? Yes ... plug and play if we are still talking rectifiers

We are. Yes, I'm wondering if all I do is take out the solid state recitifier and replace it with the tube I get from Mike. And if there's any need to rebias either way (going solid state to tube or the other way around)
thanks

Be careful and make sure to line the keyway on the tube base up with the one on the socket to avoid maximum smoke...very easy job, just watch what yer doin'.

Thanks BW. I don't know what any of that means, I'm afraid. But it sounds like I really should before I try this. Could you explain for a complete ignormus such as myself? thanks!

And if there's any need to rebias either way (going solid state to tube or the other way around) thanks Going from solid state to tube there is a slight voltage drop so the bias is generally fine and dandy. Going the other way I generally check the bias due to a bit higher plate voltage with the SS rectifier.
