My Ghia combo came with a Greenback. I thought it wasn't loud enough so I switched to a V30, thought it sounded too muddy. Now I am using a Weber Alnico Blue Dog and it sounds great. I would consider trying something else .........looking for a rock tone with some breakup using a Les Paul. What speaker are you using and why? Pro's/Cons?

I run my Ghia into an Avatar open back loaded with a Celestion Blue. This is a very efficient, loud speaker with lots of chime and a solid low end. With a rating of only 15 watts, it serves the Ghia well IMO.

Madison does the Blue hold together well at high volume? My experience with the GB is that it sounds great at lower volume but when pushed hard it becomes very loose and splatery. Is splatery a word?!!...LOL

When I had my Ghia, I ran it through a Celestion G12H30 with great results. I really liked the bottom end with this speaker.

Joe, Have you seen this link from Celestion? professional.celestion.com/guitar/features/tone/index.htmlThey recommend the classic lead or G12T-75 for rock in a boutique head/combo. The G12T-75 is described as a Greenback on steroids. Maybe that's what you are looking for. I dunno, it's all a matter of taste. Like LeftyLang, I really like the Celestion G12H30 with the Ghia. I'm real interested in the Scumbag H SA-12-75 which is supposed to be a stellar boutique version of the G12H30. scumbagamps.com/scumbacks/speakers.htmlIn fact, I'm thinking of selling or trading my 2x10 Ghia for a 1X12 Ghia and dropping in the Scumbag.

Dr. Z uses a V30 in the Ghia 1x12 Combo. He profeses to make 'no compromises' when it comes to selcting the best components and tone for his amps. Is the V30 his first choice for best tone with a Ghia 1 x 12?

I said above I was going to get a 1x12 Ghia but I'm waffling between that and a Ghia head and 2x12 cab.

Is the V30 his first choice for best tone with a Ghia 1 x 12? I think the Ghia works well with many speakers and it's a matter of taste which is best for you. I hear some Ghia 1x12's come with a Greenback so even Dr. Z probably thinks there is more than one "correct speaker" for the Ghia.

I'm impressed it has a good balance of lows/highs as I bet your cab's bass is nothing short of glorious. First of all, the Z's Best is known for having good bass. Then Dr. Z uses the G12H30 (75hz bass response) for the stock speaker with more bass and your 2nd speaker (G12H30-55hz bass response) has more bass yet (and originally intended to be used with bass guitar). I bet your cab could even make my Tele sound a mile wide! ;D

I love my greenback pair in open back cab- I tried the 75's and V30 but the greenbacks did it for me- open back but not half closed back- I found that too full on in midrange

My old style Dr Z 1x12 has a P12Z speaker in it. It an alnico speaker built by Ted Weber to Dr Z's specs. I envision it more in the Fender tweed style, but it sounds great with my Carmen Ghia. Incredible clean tone with just a little hair on it.

P12Z is VERY Delux-ish sounding... Definitely cool with the Ghia. That brings up an interesting point...
The speaker is definitely the way to shape or accentuate certain points of the overall voice of the Ghia... Anyone who owns just the Ghia would be VERY well served to own a handful of different speakers (or better yet different cabs) to get different tones out of the Ghia in different contexts.
With a box full of different tubes for V1, a couple different options for V2 (12ax7, 5751, 12BH7, 12AT7)and a few different cab/speaker options at your diposal, you can go a LOT of different directions with the Ghia.
Since the question was particularly about 1x12's, it depends what you want... The Ghia still retains it's own character no matter what you use, but it depends on if you want to make it sound more Deluxish, a bit Voxier, or a bit more Marshallesque.
P12Z (or some other Weber tweed type speaker) = Deluxish
Blue (15 watt Celestion or Weber) = Most Voxiester, but a single Blue can lack a little low end.
Ceramic Celestions (Vintage 30, G12H30, Greenback M25) = different Marshallesque flavors
The G12H30 is an awful nice combination of the Marshall crunch and the Vox chime if you're looking for a middle ground. Scumback speakers are a particularly good specimen to check out on the G12H30 front as well. The 75hz cone if you primarily use 'buckers, or the 55hz if you primarily use single coils.
The Vintage 30 has a a voicing that is overall VERY well suited to the Ghia's tone control.
