I love my CAZ. I love my open-back cabs. I love AlNiCos. I love them all together. But I have no love for Tone Tubbies. They just sound too muddy and unresponsive to my ears. Personal preferences aside, if you are a high-gain player and want that big but tight bottom, you really need a sealed cab. I have a 1960TV loaded with G12Cs and a 1960B repro loaded with Eminence Red Fangs. The CAZ loves them both. Yeah it's my first open back cab. I did put a TT chicago blue in a Egnater Tweaker 15w 112 combo and liked what it did. But admittedly it was very similar to the G12H30 that it replaced. But the amp is new to me too, so I can't be totally objective in how similar they sound. It did make it quieter, which I really like.
But I do think I'm just biased towards closed back cabs. However I wouldn't describe either of the TT's as muddy. Maybe unresponsive on the Alnico Reds.
And a cab with something "green backish" is next on my radar. I've found a few, but am lacking in the funds department right now. So it may not be anytime soon. I did find out that apparently the mojotone watchtowers are G12C's with a different name. Scumbacks are pretty high on my radar, and what I've heard of the WGS green beret seem good too. Of course the Celestions sound nice too. Both the reissue and the heritage. Anyway, I'm sure the right cab will come along.

Running my CAZ into a 12" Creamback M65 in a closed-back cab. Sounds great and probably will be fantastic with an additional cab. I find this is the best choice in speaker for the CAZ if you go the route of a 1x12 mini stack. The head will fit no problem. It lets you get the Level control up cooking without being overbearingly loud, and lets the speaker and amp really open up. Yeah the creambacks will probably be my next cab after the greenbacks. I want a variety to choose from. And as versatile as the CAZ45 is, so far it's worked well with all the cabs I've tried, being able to swap cabs + it's versatility should allow me to cover a flat out enormous range of tones without another amp. At least until I get a Z-wreck. That's I was actually looking at when I found the CAZ45 haha.

The Mojotone Watchtowers are the G12Cs that are in my 1960TV. Mojotone literally just slaps the Watchtower sticker over the Marshall sticker. The boxes they ship in even have Celestion markings. I bought them because they sound like the old Greenbacks and they are very inefficient. So I can crank up my amps a bit more without hurting anyone. And if I recall correctly, when I bought my Watchtowers, they were about $95 each with free shipping, a steal!

No shame in a 4x12! Especially if you don't have to move it around Welcome to the forum and congratulations on a fantastic amp purchase! God bless, Todd

Long time no updates. Well I still haven't bought anything with a green back. Yet. But I think I found what I want. With my recent experiments, and mostly positive results, of using the Tone Tubby Speakers. I think I'm going to give the new Celestion G12m Hempback a shot. There's only one, not so great, demo of it out there, but looking at the frequency response, it seems very similar to their current G12m Greenback. Just a little different top end response. And so far I'm liking the top end of the TT's. So it seems like a good match. However they aren't available yet. So it may be a bit before I get one. I figure I'll put it in the top of the 2061cx cab and see what I think. Both with and without the G12H30. But I also need to actually pre-order it also. Anyway when/if I get one I'll post an update.

I mentioned this in a different thread, but what about the Caz with the Dr Z EMS cab? It has a g12h30 and a cream back in it. I would be really interested to hear this combo!

I should check back more often. So I bought a basic avatar 212 with newer UK Celestion Greenbacks. Basically got it for the price of a used pair of GBs. And it was close enough I could drive to get it. It is covered in carpet with a metal grill and not the most attractive cab. It's also not very big, which I guess is a bit good and bad. However I've been so busy all I've done is literally plug it in and make sure it passed audio that sounded reasonable. With my Dad's tele that was nearby, and I've never plugged in before. So I can make no judgements about how it sounds. Although on looks alone, I'm probably going to get a new cab. Unless it just blows me away with it's awesome tone. Which I'm not exactly expecting. My first swap, will probably be to put them in my 2061cx cab and see what happens. But I've been looking and reading. A lot of people seem to think either a bluesbreaker or 1936 style cab is a good choice for GB's. And there's not a lot of love for the 2061 cab. Which intrigues me. I think mine sounds pretty good. So it has me prematurely thinking (and googling).... Has anyone used TRM cabs before? They have a 212 that has a front port that can be covered, and the back panel is 3 piece, so you can do open/closed back too. It's pine with a birch plywood baffle and back panels. I've never had a pine cab before. They say they're a bit more lively... which sounds interesting, until it doesn't sound good. Anyway I'm tempted to order one. I know I should just jam with the current cab first. Which I'll probably get to do some of Monday. Also they make a thiele cab. I've always thought those were cool. But then I need another new speaker..... rabbit holes abound.

So I didn’t get to sit down and spend the time like I wanted to Monday. I actually didn’t play it at all. But today I got to jam for 30 mins or so. I should have bought greenbacks before. Overall I was impressed. Def has the “in your face” sound but not in a harsh or aggressive way. Just a “Here I am” sort of way. But add the aggression control and the sound starts to really just jump out. And I’m not sure how broken in these speakers are. The guy I bought it from seemed to imply he had barely played it. But that’s what everyone trying to sell almost anything says. But to his credit it does look practically brand new.
I really do think I’ll order that TRM cab. He has a decent return policy, and if there was any flaw, in the cab it was that it could use a bit more bottom. And being able to tune it the port could be useful. And maybe opening up the back could make it a bit less “in your face”. So I think it could be a good match.

I have 5 of them currently in the following configurations: 1959 Bassman 4x10s 1960 Deluxe 1x12 Tweed Deluxe extension cab by Rocket Cabs 1x12 Custom 2x12 by J-Designs A Marshall Bluesbreaker 2x12 style extension cab by Sourmash My observations are based primarily upon my own live gigs at stage volume but you can hear many of these characteristics even at lower levels at home. Pine is a bit warmer and and sounds a bit compressed compared to birch. The old Fender designs with floating baffles have a nice, airy, almost reverb-like quality to them. Pine is also very light, so pine cabs are easier to haul around. I think they sound great with brighter, dynamic amplifiers and speakers but can be a bit too tame with darker, compressed amps and speakers. They excel for all kinds of classic rock, jazz and especially country. However, if you are into the modern, processed, heavy FX scene or new metal is your thing, birch is better for you. It's only a rabbit hole until you find YOUR sound!

Cool. I used to be into harder/heavier rock, but never into anything even that "metal". Plus I still have some other cabs if need be. But a bit warmer and compressed don't sound like a bad thing for these speakers. And if not I'll either put something else in there or send it back.

Good to hear. I just pressed the "buy now" button. So it should get here in a 3-4 weeks according to the website. And with things like they are, I won't be upset if it takes longer.
And I don't need to know, but how to the Thiele cabs sound? And what speakers did you use? EV's or something else? That will probably be my next cabinet.
FWIW I've been looking at amp and cab switchers. That's going to make life easier haha.

I bought the Thiele’s for the Celestion F12-x200’s I bought for my Kemper. These are “full range live response” speakers (Celestion’s phrase for FRFR speakers). I use them for “in the room” cab sound from the Kemper. They sound great.

I bought a TRM thiele cab and did the grille and tolex myself. It's loaded with an EVM-12L and sounds huge. Here's a couple of pics, before and after finishing it up. It makes for a killer stack that I wish I could gig, but it's too loud for any venue my band plays. TRM does great work and the cab's light (for an EV!) and rock solid.

Man that looks sweet. Great job!! I’ll probably go with the EV speaker too. I mean that’s what the cab was designed for. As far as finish goes, I’m going to try staining mine. I want something dark gray/black. I know pine isn’t the best looking species out there, and doesn’t take that well to stain, but if I don’t like it, I’ll just tolex it. And hope it looks 1/4 as good as yours.

Okay so I'm terribly late in getting to try out my new cab. I got it 3-4 weeks ago, but I've had a lot going on, so it just sat in the corner until this past weekend. And even then I basically swapped out the speakers and made sure they still worked. However I also noticed the cone of one speaker is a bit "wrinkled". It looks like someone may have poked the edge of the cone sometime. No holes or anything. It's just not a perfect cone anymore. FWIW the old cab had the old 80's style wide metal grate grill. The kind a finger easily fits through... The good news is it doesn't seem to affect the sound that I can hear. The better news is I love it. I got to jam a couple of evenings this week, and I'm kicking myself. I'm a greenback guy. Been playing V30's for 20 years, and never hated them, never loved them. But these just sound right. They're the newer made in england ones. So not even anything "special". However I also contacted Scumback about reconing it. It's definitely something I'm considering. The only other issue I have is, it sounds great as a 212. But I think a 412 of them would just kill....

I might have to try changing out the EVM...It does sound great but I didn't have any greenbacks or V30s available when I finished it up. Now I've got one of each in a closet. Only problem would be power handling. I'm afraid the greenback wouldn't last long with the CAZ!

I'm afraid the greenback wouldn't last long with the CAZ! I would take a guess it would be fine. I mean, how loud are you playing? I'm currently really digging a GB with the MAZ38 which seems a lot more potentially problematic due to the more extreme transients in the maz38. Maybe don't listen to me though. Somehow I blew a 12L when they were rated at 300 watts. So there's that.

Dave has me worried and now I think I need a Z 2x12 with greenbacks to handle the maz38. This forum is expensive.

If that fails I guess spray paint haha. Then I'll move on to a Thiele 112 cab. And I'll probably just go with the EV speaker. And I'll probably actually do a pair.

I'm horrible at keep this up to date. So I have finished the TRM Cab. It looks pretty cool and sounds way better. Totally digging it. But it made me want a 412 w/GB's even more. I just want that "hugeness" you get with a 412. So I kept looking around and found a secret. You can get a 1960ax brand new from a well known retailer across the pond for a little over $800 shipped. So I now have one of those also. It needs some breaking in. I'm working on it.
Oh and I bought an amp/cab selector and a radial JD7 to split my guitar signal. I'm working on putting together quite the wall of sound. I'll post pics soon. I promise.
