I had a red one with a bigsby on it with gold hardware that I retrofitted with TV Jones pups (Supertron neck/Classic Plus bridge). It worked out just fine, was pretty versatile and a real looker. My luthier really liked it and made me an offer for pretty much what I had in it, so I let it go to a good home.

We bought one a couple of weeks ago.
Fit and finish were great, sounds great and plays great. Pretty amazing for the price. I will add this though. There is a fair amount of variation between guitars so I would not buy one without playing it

Yes, pcns, I think I was lucky getting a “good” one.

Yes, pcns, I think I was lucky getting a “good” one. I used mine a praise band rehersal today. Very happy with how it sounded with a full band through my Carmen Ghia!

My first electric was from the pre-Fender days. It was what you should expect for a guitar in the $300-400 range. In the past five years every Gretsch I've picked up from their new lines has been great. I honestly can't figure out in playing them side by side what you're getting in the $1,200 models that you aren't getting at $350. Sure you might want to put on new tuners or swap out the pots, but they far exceed the other big brand bargain offerings. (my thoughts from not owning one recently)

Funny thing - I just came to this site specifically to see if anyone has experience with these guitars. The 5230T (with Bigsby) caught my eye recently, and there are some nice ones on Reverb for under $400. The MIC thing doesn't bother me at all, although I haven't owned a MIC guitar before. Watched a couple YT vids and these seem like very cool guitars, huge bang for the buck, and a ton of fun. I realize a $400 guitar is going to have its limitations. On the other hand I watched an episode of Zac Childs' True Tone Lounge featuring Jedd Hughes, and Jedd was getting some KILLER tones out of a restored 60's Teisco, which were considered el cheapos in their time. Hey, maybe the guitar doesn't matter! I've never dipped my toe in the Gretsch waters before, and I'm thinking this might bring a new, rootsier (no spell checker, not "tootsie") voice to my arsenal. One of my gigs may start to head in that kind of direction and although I could play a Tele, I thought it might be fun to try something different. That silver 5230T is a looker!
