Hey all. I'm new to the tube amp world and grabbed a Maz18 from a buddy who preached it's sweetness.
I find it to be a very bright sounding amp. I would describe it as sharp no matter how I set it up.
I played my bros vintage sounds 6v6 princeton style amp and it's so warm and creamy sounding.
Is there a dr z that has that kind of tone? I'm open to any suggestion.
Thanks in advance

Therapy is a wonderfully warm amp.
I think the Nova falls in that Fenderish Warm category.
The Maz can be tamed with speakers and tubes, or you can try the two mentioned prior.

Welcome to the Forum - a lot of good people and information here. The Cure, Z-Lux and Z-Master might get you to where you want to be.

Dont rule put a different speaker. A creamback would help smooth it out

Don't be afraid to turn that Cut control down. I think most Tele players start out at home with it around 9:00. When playing with a live band you will want to run it a little higher. Humbucker and P-90 type pickups also usually need to be a little brighter.
I didn't get what a great amp it is until the first time I played it at a gig.

Yeah—I always ran the cut very low when I was gigging a Maz, treble and mids at maybe 11:00, bass about noon. As for speakers, I’d maybe try Doc’s Z12 or similat to round off those highs, if a Blue or Gold is too bright for you. If you’re looking for something more Fendery there are great choices in Doc’s lineup—love the Z-Lux, and of course there’s the great EZG.

The other thing that I found was once I started opening up the master volume and pushing the power section, I found more tone than I ever expected. My previous amp was a Marshall master volume JMP. So, I was used to getting all of my tone via the preamp since it has so much gain. I was trying to run my Maz Jr in the same way. I eventually got an AirBrake, turned up the master, and felt like I had a brand new amp. And, I continue to love it to this day.

This is incredible info folks and very much appreciated. I'm not opposed to speaker tube alterations.
Someone mentioned the cream back speaker so I'll try that out. Are there tube suggestions I could consider to move toward my goal of warming up the sound?
Thanks again to everyone.

Doc is using NOS 6N14N (EL84 – matched pair) tubes in his production Maz 18s and they sound really good! PerryR here on the forum has a good collection of tubes and I'm sure he has them in stock for a good price. (his handle here is PerryR)

+1000 to Mike’s 6N14N suggestion. I had my Maz18 for 14 years and numerous power tube changes (a couple of preamp tubes also). Somewhere along that journey it lost some of its luster and appeal to me. I bought the 6N14N from Perry and it was heaven. Sweet, warm,, and luscious. We only parted ways because it was a 2x10 combo and was getting heavy, and a Z-Plus was beckoning. I regret that decision. I should have traded a different amp.

Welcome to the forum!
I like the speaker suggestion as well. That can make a big difference. I've had good luck with Eminence and use their Lil Texas Neo in my Cure and a 1-12 Mesa cab. I also like their Cannibus Rex.

Agree on the Greenback or Creamback speaker option, another good one with the Maz is the WGS ET-65. Nice and warm but still maintains great clarity of tone. And like others say, use that Cut control. The Maz is a great amp live, I've got the 8 and the 18NR, both MKII. Let us know what you end up with, I'm sure you'll get there.

The M75. I went with the 65 watt version. I know that is way overkill in a MAZ 8 but it allows me to re-amp it with my Fryette Power Station if need be.

I would give it a go with a full band before changing anything. I've spent all kinds of time and effort (and $$) dialing in an amp at home and then have it disappear in the mix of a band. The Maz amps have an incredible ability to cut through a mix without needing to be loud (Carmen Ghia is the same way). You have a great amp to get started with, enjoy the ride!! Todd
