Hi all, I am curious about different types of speakers and tube substitutions that can be used with the new MAZ 18 reverb. Personally I have found the EH 12at7 for the reverb driver works well and tung sol 12ax7 in v1 is definitely better than the stock JJ. Thanks and mercy Christmas.

Also is there a noticeable difference using 8 or 4 ohm load (with correct speaker impedance) compared to the 16 ohm load I'm stuck with using due to my speaker cab. There is a youtube video stating there is a difference in terms of the sound, volume and upper harmonics in 4 ohm load.

I personally have always trusted the Doc on tubes and speakers as he does a huge amount of testing before he releases an amp.JMHO

With the exception of V1 and V2 12AX7's, I follow Dr Z's specification exactly.
I bought my amp used and V1 and V2 were new production Svetlana 12AX7's. They sound good to me.
The amp came with Sovtek EL84M power tubes. They sounded OK, but I decided to go with Doc's current specification of Soviet 6p14p, available from PerryR and they were a huge improvement.
I've come to believe that no other living amp designer is more diligent about selecting every component that he puts in an amp.

I've tried a variety of tubes with my Maz 18, but the stock tube setup sounds as good as, or better than anything else.
I'm not a fan of the G12H Anniversary speaker though. WGS Reaper HP, Celestion Creamback 65 both sound nice. I took my Maz 18 to where we practice and plugged into the cabinet. It sounded great. At the end, I realized I grabbed the wrong cabinet and had been using a Vintage 30. To my surprise, it really sounded great, clean and with a variety of overdrive pedals. Our bass player also plays guitar and he's been raving about how good the amp sounds with that V30.
I would use a speaker that has the correct impedance to the amp.

You might like the change but I highly doubt in the end you will consider it a lot better than where you started. I am a BIG fan of the Z-12 and Z-10 speakers. The best improvement you can make is investing in a NOS rectifier just for reliability. A Celestion Alnico Gold speaker may be a major upgrade you will like but it also comes at a major price. I have been down this rabbit hole. I too like those Tung-Sol 12AX7's in V1.

Dropped a Celestion Alnico Ruby (35w) into my MAZ 18 JR NR .... very happy with the result now that it is somewhat broken-in.
