Two of my Barber pedals can definitely get saturated without being angry-sounding: the B.U.S.S. (a take off the older Burn Unit) is a little more "overdrive" sounding, and the Direct Drive is more classic British OD/distortion. Both excellent.

Not to be “that guy”, but I have a ZVEX Double Rock in the fear listing. The Prymaxe video really shows off it’s softer side. Even at high gain settings it doesn’t mush up. I also really liked the VFE Alpha Dog, a great Rat clone, that I regret letting go. He’s now working under V of E pedals and has a custom shop set up taking orders for summer 2020. Tempted to get an Alpha Dog.

I’ve always thought the FullDrive did this well - very smooth and not harsh.

I really like the Jetter GS-124 and use it as an always-on OD for my base tone. It's a little bit compressed, has plenty of low end and no spiky highs or harsh upper mids. If you want more gain and compression, the Wampler Velvet Fuzz is excellent--the "tight" setting is a smooth distortion, the "big" setting gets into spitty fuzz tones, and it's nice to have both of those things in one pedal if you've got limited space on your board.

Todd, I'm thinking the red Nova combo ought to do the trick! As smooth as it gets.

My first thought was Fulltone Plimsoul.....and you can find em used for under a hundred.

I use a Barber Burn Unit on my small board and a Barber Gain Changer and a Fulltone Plimsoul on my larger board.
Both setups have plenty of gain range.

My first thought was Fulltone Plimsoul.....and you can find em used for under a hundred. I love the Plimsoul (and still have it on my board) but for smooth overdrive you have to keep that second stage knob turned down. It’ll definitely get “in your face” with that knob turned up (which is how I use it).

The Wampler Sovereign covers a lot of ground. And another shout about the Duelist. For what you've mentioned you're after, both are in that zone for sure. t

ZVEX Box of Rock....killer smooth distortion (very close to OD) and a transparent switchable (on/off) boost to boot...

All I can say is I've been using the Analog Man KOT for ten years or so now as a main drive pedal, and I bought a spare....works for me. I have one or two more on my board, but the KOT is the one.

I'm a fan of Barber overdrives. I have a Gain Changer, BUSS and 1/2 Gainer (which is my favorite). I think they can all be smooth.
But I've been using a Kingsley Harlot for about a year now. It's the most amp like overdrive that I've played through. They're expensive, but I finally stopped looking at drive pedals.
My KoT pedal is setting on a shelf in my music room. It didn't work for the sound I was going for.

DC here!
I have the Timmy pedal from Paul Cochrane - a very nice overdrive pedal that
doesn't change the overall tonality of your guitar and amp too much.
Cheers: Dixiechicken!

Another vote for the Timmy, and a Barber Gain Changer or Small Fry. If the venue is right and the amp I brought isn’t overpowering the room, I prefer my drive to come from my Z amp.

I've used the Lightspeed (low OD), Fulldrive (smooooooth), Timmy (ultimately adjustable) and KTR (it does "that" thing) and like them all. Running the Lightspeed and KTR both on and set low is a lovely sound too.

Another vote for the Plimsoul. It does smooth very well. There is a ton of gain if that's what you want or scale it back by turning off the second stage drive. That being said, the Barber gain Changer is another dandy. Not as gainy (still has plenty), but very flexible with 2 drive settings and 3 tone options. These are 2 pedals I can't seem to replace...

Here’s another vote for a KOT. In addition to that, I’d add the Beano Boost (not an OD, but achieves the same thing) or a JHS Double Barrel (really the Morning Glory is the side I’m referring to though). I’ve heard nothing but great things about the Greer Lightspeed, but I don’t have experience there. I’ve got a Supro Drive on the way this week, but it might be raunchier than you’re lookin for.

I know I might be a little late to the party here, but I've always loved the Cmatmods Signa Drive. You have so many options with it but can get a good smooth overdrive as well. I have always used it as part of my base drive tone.
