I just picked up a Celestion Ruby and dropped it into my new Maz 18 NR Mkii. I'm not saying it is an upgrade or it is "better" ... but I am saying I like it more. I cannot describe what about good alnico speakers it is that I like, but there is a cohesiveness of the sound, the highs seem more aligned with the rest of the lower pitched notes. Call it compression or what have you ... just something about it works better in my ears.
Also, an odd thing. I got the Maz brand new about 3-4 weeks ago and noticed a buzzing on any D or Eb note ... I was quite sure it was some kind of tube rattle. I've pulled each tube and gently reinserted ... it never went away ... However, it is now completely gone with the Ruby. So, does that mean I had a defective speaker with the stock G12H 30w? The screws were tight - not terribly tight, but not loose enough to rattle. Ideas?

#1 I love Alnico speakers in ANY amp, they are just "magic"!
#2 Each speaker resonates at a certain frequency.... Each cab seems to have it's own frequency too. Sometimes, those two collide (for lack of better words) and rattle things you didn't know that were able to rattle. Especially when you hit a certain note.

Yeah, I have certain amps and cabs that when I hit an "A", it sounds like the amp is going to explode (when it's loud).....some amps, it's a D......Some amps it's a G#.......Some amps, it's an E. But, when I play them through a different cab, they don't resonate the same. The amp that resonated on "D", no longer does (ect, ect...). So, it makes perfect sense that a speaker swap would cure a "rattle" in your amp.

Place the G12h30 in a different cab and test with distance between the tubes and speaker (eliminate the possibility of the speaker vibrating the tubes).
I got a Ruby, haven’t spent much time with it but it has a cool character. I Need to mess with it some more!

FYI: Tube rattle is often not eliminated by removing and inserting the tubes. Some tube will just rattle....

Agree, it was just something to try and I mentioned it so I would not get instructions from people on how to remove and reinsert the tubes ;-)
