Hello and nice greetings from austria first. I heard , that perhaps a lower wattage stangray will be released? Does anybody know more about that?

I believe the Doc mentioned a re-release, wih a half-power switch. Welcome to the forum! I think Doc mentioned it in his AMA on the Stangray as a possibility in the future. However, I don't think there's been any discussion since. Doc is building them as direct builds under the Legacy Model builds, but that's limited to the continental US

There's a thread about a M12 mod that sounded pretty good Doc did at a mini Z-Fest a couple years ago. We did a side by side comparison and was real close. It was the Steve Miller mod or something thereof...

Yup, it was the M12 with lower-output EL-844 tubes, then bumped back up a little with a stiffer 5AR4 rectifier (plus an internal bias mod that Doc would have to do). Kind of a stiffer M12 or a quieter StangRay... but still didn't have that HUGE bottom end that the StangRay's massive output section will give you. Close enough? Yeah, but not identical.

Quotes from M-12 fourm. Hey Fellers, What about swapping the 5Y3 out for a GZ34? Plug it in and try, it will work no biasing needed. Will take away some of the sag of the 5Y3 tighten up the bottom and give the M12 more punch. DR.Z ztalk.proboards.com/thread/68366/upgrades-stock-12I received a request/order for two M-12's from Steve Miller. Steve needed a rig for a NYC project at Lincoln Center. Steve loves his StangRay sets ( 8 years and counting on the road ) and wanted a lower powered SR , same drive and punch but way less wattage/volume.
So I modded a standard M-12 it came out great, here's what I did. 1) Install a Chinese 5AR4 rectifier. 2) Rebias by replacing 180 Ohm 10 watt bias resistor with a 150 Ohm 10 watt resistor. 3) Replace JJ EL-84's with Low wattage JJ-EL-844 ( request Medium Range Matched set ).
There you go, a nice tonal upgrade and the EL-844's bring the volume down but the 5AR4 brings the tone and drive up. You can leave the JJ-EL-84's in place and have a M-20 then, I would swap out the EH-EL -84's if they came stock . Amps with EH's were built during the JJ tube rattle fiasco.
To help replicate the StangRays overall sound, I built Steve a 1X10 Combo loaded with a Celestion 10" Gold, and a 1X12 combo loaded with a 12" Gold.

You probably could have Dr Z’s shop install a half power switch on your Stangray. I purchased an original Stingray last year and had it shipped directly to the Z shop for a checkup. They installed the half power switch on mine. It is handy to have. Send them a message and they may be able to hook you up.

A half power switch ist a good solution, but the little problem is...i live in austria, and to get the amp to america and back...hmm...

I just received my StangRay w/half-power switch I ordered as a Legacy model special order. Absolutely mind blowing good!!! I'm running it at half power through a Blue. Amazing!

I am not sure how it works. I thought I heard it grounds 2 of the 4 tubes but don’t quote me on that. I can say that is that it does not sound or feel like an attenuator

I would expect two of the four EL84s muted with Grid 1 sinking to ground with current limiting series resistance.

I'm not sure exactly how it works, but it feels and sounds amazing. And not like using an attenuator at all.

One more thing I wanted to add about the half-power option...
I was going to just get a 12" Gold so I could safely run it at full power. However, I really only need to run at half power. And so I run a 12" Blue. Now when I run at half-power, I can run the volume up to nice punchy sweetness AND I get a bit of speaker compression too. The Gold would'nt do that for me. Sounds absolutely incredible!
