So I got this Harley Benton SC550 Deluxe Les Paul takeoff last week, and I was pleasantly surprised. I had a set of Skatterbrane pickups laying around that I've never really bonded with in any of my other guitars, so...yeah. I now have a guitar that has pickups that cost more than the whole guitar did. While I was in there I built up a whole new harness with Switchcraft jack and switch, good pots, and nice wire. Good Sprague caps, 50s wiring style. I'm really happy with this thing now, it sounds great, and plays very nicely too. I'm into it for about $500 now and it outplays/out sounds some guitars costing WAY more. Those old Skatterbranes are really nice...they're PAF style, and he used as close as could be sourced to the original parts to build them. Kind of strange how they never really did it for me in some very nice guitars, but in this little cheapie they rock. So now I've got a guitar that I can take out to open mics and not worry too much about getting it boosted. Very cool!

I did something similar on a pre-Fender Gretsch except I didn't know anything about electronics the time and paid someone to do all the work. It sounded better, but not amazing. I eventually lost big time when I traded it for a MIM Strat. I might possibly do it more your way now that I've rewired and repaired a number of instruments. I would just make sure that it was something I thought I would keep around.
