Was just trying a few different speakers with my DB4 trying to get a little less mids and a little more glass out of it. I have a Celestion Gold in the combo and running it fully braked with a brake lite. In some cabinets, I tried a blue, a Vintage 30 and a G12H30. Each one was very much louder than the gold!!! Much to my surprise! I kinda liked the tone of the G12H30 best, but it made the amp so loud on full brake that I can’t use it! So I’m gonna keep the gold in it.
What causes different speakers to be so different in volume? Settings on the amp were not varied at all. I looked up the blue and gold stats - “sensitivity” was the same on both. What is the measure of efficiency in a speaker?
Help this poor old soul to understand. Inquiring minds want to know!

Pretty decent and not overly technical explanation from WGS here

If the gold is in the combo cabinet....and the other speakers are in different cabinets...that's going to effect tone and volume.

In addition to the incredible number of variables that can be involved, I always keep in mind that “sound” is nonlinear - power and volume are logarithmic functions. So the variables can have dramatic, or non-dramatic, effect. All of that makes it very hard to predetermine what a particular rig in a particular room will sound like (much to the glee of speaker, cab, pickup, and gear makers).

Oh. Forgot I’d posted this query. Just checked your responses - thanks gentlemen.
Yep, I’m pretty hip to the speaker cab influence, but I’d say with open back cabs, it’s more influential on tone than it is on volume. Thanks Mike for the WGS page - informative. I have an old tweed Deluxe I put a blue in, very different from the original Jensen, and much louder! Would love to get around to swapping out a gold in there now and see the difference in volume!

A gold and blue are going to sound very close..in both tone and volume.
