I recently acquired a used (2011) Maz 8. Great amp, but it was doing the random static & crackle thing, primarily (it seemed) during band practice. I thought OK, it's 9 years old, time for a retube. That appeared to solve the problem, but darn if it didn't come back loud as ever at the next band practice. So today I sat down with Dr. Z's trouble shooting instructions and went through the thing step-by-step. Back together and sounding great until . . . oh no, it's still there; random and unpredictable, but definitely still there.
At this point, I'm resigned to sending the amp in for repair. I turn off my cell phone (from which I had been viewing Dr Z's repair video and searching for other online assistance), and low and behold, the amp noise goes away; totally and completely. Turn the phone back on, and hold it anywhere near the amp, and its back. Do anything on the phone and the amp crackles away!
I don't normally have my phone near my amp when I play, but it struck me that during practice, our drummer puts his on a table right next to the amp. So, problem solved! I've never heard of this happening before, and just wanted to share. Thanks

This is a regular problem. Seems to be especially common with folks on AT&T. It's worse if you are on the fringes of service and the phone keeps searching for a tower. It's come up here enough that one of the things on the trouble shoot should probably be, turn off your cell phone.

Especially if trying to video the amp.
Put your phone in Airplane mode to eliminate RF transmission from your phone.

Been there...still doing that. Frustrating but at least now I know to relocate the phone!

Happened to me on my couple week old Z-Plus. Fortunately I had read enough about similar experiences here on the forum..I picked up my head from playing guitar glancing at the amp in bewilderment and noticed my cell phone lying on or near the amp. Off went the phone, and peace and tranquility were restored, (except for my guitar playing).
