So the Nova arrived. Unfortunately, so did my new hearing aids. Everything sounds weird right now. Going to have to give the hearing aids some time before I can really pass any kind of judgement on the Nova. I've been playing it, but as I said, everything sounds a bit weird right now. Even my Ghia sounds a bit weird. Hearing problems are the pits guys - don't wreck yours! I will say I see why everyone likes to just leave both channels on and use the guitar volume. This amp seems to respond well to that strategy. Just as well - one less pedal to confuse me. I did manage to configure my HX Stomp in 4 cable method so that programmed dirt boxes hit the front of the amp and time domain effects like reverb are in the amp's loop. And it works great! One thing I've never understood about Line6's modeled devices though - why do they also model all of the noise some of these dirt boxes add? Some are extremely quiet, but others sound like they are sitting on top of a florescent light. Oh well, I guess that's off topic for this post...

This approach also offers up a wide range of base tones: more or less regular volume, more or less OD volume.
Several people I know have hearing aids, the ones that have eq and bluetooth connectivity. They say it does take getting used to, and that their audiologists recommend wearing (and perhaps acclimating) before re-doing the eq. I'm hoping to avoid, but I suspect they're in my future too.

Yeah these are those. In fact I control them via bluetooth from my iPhone. And I have a Musician's Setting, but still - sounds a little weird at the moment. I think the Firebird may be a tad mid-heavy for the Nova, so I'm going to try a few other guitars too.

Aha... things were sounding "middy" because I had turned treble and bass down low as a result of the way the hearing aids were making it sound. I put them up where they should be and much better. In fact it sounds pretty freaking good. Gotta make a few more tweaks before a video reveal, but yikes! Sounding mighty fine here...
Still hearing weirdness from the HAs though - why can't software engineers who are musicians AND HA patients work on these things so they sound right?

I use a Strat with mine and I have the Treble and Pres at noon, the Bass at 10 o'clock. I haven't tried it with my 'bird yet.
I have the very strange low freq hearing loss in my right ear. Up until recently, low tones, like our bass guitar's amp, sounded distorted. Not so much anymore, so I think I've just "learned" to compensate. Nonetheless the damage is still there and I don't think it'll ever go away. Been to 3 ENT's and none has an explanation. Weird.

Well I should know better than to do things the way I did. Straight up I hooked up the HX Stomp in 4-cable mode because that was what I had been thinking about. But the HX Stomp was not helping the sound of the Nova, at least how I had it set up. Duh-OH! You start a new amp with a single cable to the guitar you want to use and learn the amp first! Once I yanked all that processing out of the path, and reset the tone controls - HOLY TACOS! Now we're talking! I may still get the HX Stomp set right for this amp, but I'm leaving it out of there until I'm totally comfortable with what the amp can do on its own. And based on the last couple days, it can do a LOT on its own. You CAN ignore all of the pre-preamp type effects in the HX (distortions, compression, etc.) and use ONLY the time-domain effects in the loop. Requires three cables, and since you're not plugging the guitar straight into the HX you can't use the tuner in there, so you can define that switch for one of your effects. Three foot switches, three time-domain effects in the loop. That might just be the ticket here. Why I would want any dirt box in front of this amp is a mystery. Just have to remember to take a tuner along... Hearing aids still sound a little weird though. Guess I'll get used to that in time.

With the Nova I keep going back to the way I first heard it...my Firebird straight in, nothing else. Tone.
