As some of you may know. there's a new SRV book out by Alan Paul (writer for Guitar World) and Andy Aledort (Sr. Editor of Guitar World) titled "Texas Flood: The Inside Story of Stevie Ray Vaughan". They did a book release here in Austin last Saturday, and had a bit of a jam session at a local club that evening (C-Boy's, to be exact). As a friend of one of the organizers, I was asked to lend an amp to the gig, and, naturally, I brought out the Z-Lux, which ended up being played by Alan Haynes. If you don't know who he is, do yourself a major favor and look him up. The Z-Lux was set to half power mode, as it was on stage with a blackface Deluxe Reverb (equipped with an orange back JBL, no less), and a blackface Vibrolux Reverb. In short, the Z-Lux absolutely held its own, and was noticeably more articulate than either of its "competitors." As a side note, I do wish I'd have employed the mid-boost to fatten it up just a tad, especially if I'd known Alan was coming. I know his tone and what he likes (decades long Vibro King player) and while the Z-Lux projected really, really well, he could have used some more "girth", for lack of a better word. I'm more of a Jimmie Vaughan guy (leaner, tighter tones), and Alan is more of a Johnny Winter guy (more dirt). At any rate, the Z-Lux sounded great. See some pix below. Yes, in the first picture that is Tommy Shannon on bass (stage left), Alan in the middle on guitar, and Andy on stage right (can't remember the drummer, apologies). The next picture features Jackie Newhouse (Double Trouble's first bassist), Denny Freeman (another one of Austin's greats, played with everybody, including Dylan for a number of years), Alan, and Andy again. The Z-Lux is in the very back with the purple jewel. The picture quality isn't stellar, but I thought folks around here would enjoy seeing one in the presence of greatness. Cheers!
