My Monza needs re tubing more than the others ( now down to just a Maz 8 as the other).
It's no big deal but with EL 84's, 12AX7's and 5AR4 the prices range (in UK) from £15 to £300+ and I wonder is it worth getting more expensive tubes?
I play mostly strat / tele type guitars.
Thanks John Boy

Funny you should ask this jb...been doing the mullard 5ar4 (not reissue) and a jan ge 12ax7 for v1 and the 6n14n's in maz's...taken on a robust/sweeter more sumthin...hard to describe but im liken it...
I did take off the shield for v1 in ghia and put on levis/tube damper for mirophonics control...seems to work well enough.

Change the power tubes in the monza and buy a new phase inverter. Put in the power tubes and see how it sounds. Then put in the new phase inverter and compare the sound. If it sounds the same, put back the old phase inverter and keep the new for a spare. My philosophy is don't change the other preamp tubes, tube in the Monza's case, if you like the sound of the amp. It may change with a new one, and not for the better. If you don't have a spare, get one, because you will need it some day. Then do the test comparing the new with the old and see what you get. Always start with the power tubes and work back through the preamp tubes. The amp was designed around today's tubes. I wouldn't buy more expensive ones. Maybe a NOS rectifier, but that's about it.

How much of a job is it to obtain a 230V 50Hz Ph inverter and fit?

Your tubes will be exactly the same as 120V 60Hz amps. I recommend you stick with the tubes that Z supplies with his amps, they're listed here: Dr.Z Tube info
I've tried a lot of different tubes in my Z amps and I've found that stock tubes nearly always sound just as good as NOS tubes do. Hard to believe, and I can't say the same for my vintage Fenders. They thrive on old glass. Truth is that the NOS supply of tubes has been pretty well cherry picked for the good 'uns.
The only difference I would note would be for a good NOS rectifier tube, because they're more reliable. They last and last. I've even got pulls from old organs that I've been using for years that keep on going.
