I’m looking to help my StingRay loading time a bit either by purchasing a head or 1x12 combo box (currently it’s a 2x12 combo). I know generally I prefer the sound of 2x12’s but for ease of use I’m considering a 1x12 combo. However, I know ef86 tubes are prone to microphony and I’m wondering if I’m better off with a head/cab in the long run. Amy thoughts on this as it related to the StingRay?

I am personally a head/cab kind of guy with my Ray. I like to use different cabs for speaker flavor. Also, it may be one additional trip to the car...but its a lighter load each time. The EF86 issue you mention is a real thing. The vibration from bass tones or rumble can make those tubes "microphonicz" and that is no fun on a gig.

I agree with Paul 100%! I have both: a Ray head with a Z 1x12 cab loaded with a Gold, and a 1x12 Combo with a Gold. The sound of a 2x12 is huge with the Ray but for most gigs I play it's hard to beat the setup with a single Gold. After years of load ins and back problems, I prefer the head and speaker set up. It's lighter on the back and easier on the EF86 due to the Ray being a very percussive amp as stated above. I use the combo when a really fast turn around set up is required ie... festivals and fairs. If there is more time to set up and tear down I choose my head and cab set up.

Ron Stage space is never an issue for me so I’m hoping the Brake Lite splits the middle and let’s me take advantage of the fatter sound of a 2x12 without cutting heads off
