Once again Doc's Dr. Z AMA: "Yearly Amp Maintenance" does the trick. Checking out Maddog's video post documenting his Z-LUX noise floor, I thought mine (2016 Head) could be better. ztalk.proboards.com/post/862131So I pulled the chassis, and sprayed DeOxit between chassis and all Pots and Jacks, then retighten. Sprayed each tube socket and reinstalled the tubes. Inspected each solder joint for proper integrity and no eroded solder joint. With the AMP warmed up and standby on, power down the AMP to allow the tubes to discharge the capacitors, to reduce internal high voltages. While in this state give the AMP some cool down time for the Power Tubes to cool, before pulling the Chassis. I placed an Android phone 3 inches off center from a Celestion Gold speaker to take these measurements with a Sound Meter app. Although these readings are subjective, overall the noise floor was reduced and an improvement was noticeable. I did this exercise on a 2014 MAZ 38 NR with improved noise floor results too. Which the noise floor went from 52 to 42 with all Knobs at 12:00. This maintenance worth the time and effort. Within the measurements I wanted to observe the Reverb level contribution to the idle noise floor. (no instrument was plugged in) Noise floor increases were mostly contributed by the Vol and Mvol settings. Any "After" readings 37-39 I believe was the internal fan noise. Z-LUX was on 40W setting.

Very cool, Dean. It's amazing the benefits that attention to details can reap. It's also a fruitful exercise to clean the plugs and jacks of your pedal board and guitars at least once a year. You'll be amazed at the amount of crud that'll come off on a Q-Tip soaked in DeOxit from a 1/4" jack!
Thanks for posting!
