Anyone know there are boutique companies making single coil sized (mini) humbuckers for strats? By mini, I don't mean true mini HB, like a small HB, or a stacked single coil, but a drop in replacement for a strat bridge. Similar to a Duncan Lil' 59. Got a buddy wanting some humbucker tones out of his bridge strat position and asked me for advice. Looking for something more in the vintage output, PAF-ish camp. Kicker is he wants a drop in replacement so he doesn't have to re-route the body or change pick guards. Super limiting detail. Don't know of any of the boutique guys who do something like that. So far all I have found is these. - Seymour Duncan Lil' Pearly Gates (alnico 2)
- Seymour Duncan Red Devil (alnico 5)
- Seymour Duncan Lil' 59 (Ceramic)
- Seymour Duncan Custom Shop - Custom Wind to Order (A5 or Ceramic)
- DiMarzio Pro Stack (Ceramic)
I only have experience with the Lil 59. If you have any experience with these or better recommendations, I'm all ears.

I have a Lil 59 in the bridge on one of my Teles--smokin' pickup, plenty of muscle--I think a Strat loaded with three of 'em would be killer.

Yes, my buddy is going with the Lil 59. Oddly, the specs of the Lil 59 for strat are drastically different than the Tele version. Less mids and output. I guess this is to better match the rest of the strat pickups.
I think it will be just what he’s looking for. If not, maybe we’ll try the DiMarzio Chopper.

Fralin SP43s. More like a P-90 tone, but no hum. Also very "stratty" when dialed back just a smidge. I have a 50th annv. strat(body) I built from the the best parts I could buy at the time(Callaham/Warmouth etc.) with 3 of 'em in it. Deffly one of my faves.

Also a consideration: A while back I thought I wanted a bridge bucker in my strat as I play mostly HB equipped guitars. Instead I went with a noiseless and love it. I can lay on the gain and still get a very stratty response with loads of bite. Did the same for one of my teles.

I've got a set of Fralins and the SP43 in the bridge rocks. It gets that P90 growl going on but roll back to 7 or 8 on the Volume and it cleans up nicely. Not spiky sounding either, it's fat. Great pickup. But it's not a humbucker. They make the Split Steel Pole Strat Bridge p/u that is humbucking, but I don't have any experience with that one.

Was getting late for an old man.

Hey guys! My buddy wound up going with the Lil 59. Wanted to get as close to a true humbucker vibe as he could. Installed it Saturday night for him and he seems to be really pleased with it. Thanks for all the input.

Curtis Novak. Give him a call, tell him exactly what you’re hoping for and he makes them with a magic wand and EVH fart dust. His stuff is amazing.
