Thinking about removing the cover on my Tele Neck pickup. Maybe replace with an open top cover? Anyone done this with good results? Is there anything else other than the two metal tabs that fold under to hold the cover on? Does the cover just pop off after that? Guessing the wax may need a little warming up as well. Just want to make sure I'm not going to break anything thats hidden below, or that there isn't some extra soldering that has to occur. I found this link already. Seems straightforward. www.guitarpickups.xyz/blogs/how-tos/how-to-remove-the-cover-from-a-tele-neck-pickupFWIW...My neck pickup is a Fralin Stock overwound +2%. It was ordered with my Blues Special Bridge pickup. I wanted a traditional look and Lindy recommended no more than +2% over as the max with the neck cover. Too dark otherwise. Wishing now I would've got the normal Blues Special pickup. Ha!

I think it depends on the brand and model. I took a cover off a Tele pickup once and it was fine. Didn't like the thought of exposed coils though and put the cover back on. Not sure what model though. It was a long time ago.

I have had mixed success doing this. I ruined a couple trying to get the cover off. There was wax potting all over the inside that caused the winding to break when pulling off the cover. You will definitely need to tape the winding after you remove the cover , otherwise you can hook your small E string under the bobbin and break the winding....yes....been there-done that. The Blues Special neck is an excellent solution, I would also recommend a Rio Grande Vintage tallboy or a Lollar Royal T. I have one of each in some of my Teles and they all have a clearer tone than a covered pickup. I have also had good results with a Strat pickup with the cover removed and with taped windings. Its a tight fit but sounds great.

This worked great by the way. Thanks for the insight guys. Just had to unsolder the ground wire to the cover and bend the tabs back. Cover came off real easy. Was very little wax on the actual cover. Coils were already taped off so all is safe.
Did this on a buddies tele. Just what he was after. He’s a strat player so it’s more in his ballpark. Considering doing it on my Fralin still but will give it a few more weeks to see if I really want to take the plunge.

It might be a prudent idea to contact Lindy about how or whether to pull the cover off his pickup. He'll tell you what is underneath for sure; whether it's taped, waxed, etc. He's an approachable guy and was very helpful to me.

Went ahead and removed the cover on another guitar pickup last night. My Fralin Blues Special. Truthfully, I think it is just a stock 2% over neck pickup. I wanted a cover so they did not do the true BS neck spec since it is too dark with a cover. Went smoothly, although slow. I was super sensitive about not wanting to rip the cover off and have wax pull away and break the wire. Gently coaxed the cover off with the soldering iron. All I can say is, Lindy sure knows how to wax pot a pickup...if you know what I mean. So. Much. Wax. Replaced it with an open top cover. Trying to decide if I like it, or absolutely hate it It's definitely not a tele sound anymore. So for iconic tele neck licks, I am now very disappointed. But I think all in all, I will actually use the neck PU more often. Has a closer tonality to the bridge now, just warmer. Definitely more stratty. Will play around with it for a while. Got to redial in some pedals now to suit. Anyone else using open top neck pickups in a Tele??? What are your thoughts. Side note: I did contact Lindy's crew. They were super helpful and supportive of the idea. They said an open top cover would sound about halfway between a full cover and no cover. Darker than no cover, but brighter than covered. They did recommend a professional do the repair. I thought to myself, "You ARE a professional, Jordan!"...Me and the pickup both survived.

I’m using a Lollar Royal T in the neck of my American Standard. It’s a best of both worlds pickup IMO. It has an open top cover so the coils can breath, but still has the classic nickel/chrome around the coils for a classy look. The pickup sounds amazing, but who cares about tone around here! 😜
