What do you do when you're recovering from surgery? You buy a Les Paul Gold Top with P90s. This is really Lee's (Maddog) fault. He has that '56 LP that I love. He teases us all by putting pictures of it up from time to time. lol It will get here on Wednesday. I've wanted P90 LP for a while. I'll run it though my Therapy for some "Therapy".

That is a beauty! I was so lucky to get mine when I was a wee little lad. I remember there was a used Tele on the wall for $250 and the '68 P90 Gold Top Les Paul on the wall for $350. If my Dad could sell a piece of furniture in the garage, it was the Les Paul. Otherwise, the Tele. Furniture sold and I've been playing that guitar since 1976. Beautiful Sound! You're going to love it!
Recover well and enjoy!

All,
I doing pretty well from my surgery. I thought I could get out on Friday and go to lunch. That was a mistake that I paided for yesterday. So, I'll just hang out here at home and wait for that Gold Top to show up. I'll put up more pictures when it gets here.

Hey Russel, help me out hear, because I'm a little ignorant to this info. are the P-90's that are used in all Gibson's the same, or do they have different P-90's? I mean, does the $900 Les Paul tribute have the SAME P-90's in it as the $3,000 Les Paul?

Beautiful. I think I love Gold Tops the best of any Gibson finish. All it needs now is 40+ years worth of patina.

That's great, Russell. Enjoy that fine guitar.
Reminds me I need to put my LP goldtop back together. It's been sitting in a case waiting for me to put its bridge back on.

She's a beaut, Russell. I've got a Gold Top Tribute from 2010 or so that I pulled the P-90s out of and put some Lollar Mini Humbuckers in. It's a blast. I'd have left the P-90s in there but I've got a LP Jr. Special with P-90s so it was a no-brainer.
Feel better fast, brother...I wanna hear a clip when you get the guitar set up and cookin'!!!

Here it is. I have a few pics. I'll have to get used to the thick neck, but it sounds fantastic. I can't find a flaw on it. These P90s..... Check out the back! I don't know the three piece headstock is "period correct" or not, but the "wings" where added. I know the "narrow" binding is "period correct". You can see where the maple meets the mahogany.

It will take me a while to get used to the neck, but the P90s sound great clean through the Cure and "just breaking up" as well. The volumes work really well in cleaning up the amp. The tones work very well too. I like to turn down the tones a little on all my guitars.
I've not had a lot of time to work it with the Therapy yet, but I'll get there. It's really heavy! lol It is almost 10 pounds. My '17 LP Standard had weight relief and only weighs 8 pounds. Those 2 pounds really make a difference. I really think it's a little thicker than my '17 LP Standard, but that may be an illusion. I'll measure them later and see.

That's a BEAUTY, Russell. It's got beautiful wood hue and I really dig the case too. Very classy. I love the stock Gibson P-90's on my LP Special, they ooze tone. Hope you're feeling better, buddy. Make a clip for us when you get a chance. Not to derail, but my new Seymour Duncan Custom Shop pups should be here in a week or so. They're for that Epi Korina V "Amos" I got, and I can't wait. I'll do a demo with the same setup I had with the stock guitar last month, so we'll see. So happy for you, brother!!!
PS, I think the three piece headstock is correct.

What a beauty!! As for your headstock, I don’t know if it’s period correct, but I got a new Les Paul traditional a couple months back and my headstock is exactly like yours.

I played an identical one in GC San Antonio a coupla weeks ago. Fit and finish were flawless, and the neck felt similar; maybe a hair thicker than my '56 Suzie Q. After 2-3 minutes of playing, my hands had completely adjusted and easily accommodated the period-correct neck, and it felt great!
It sounded very good amp'ed as well....maybe a little livelier than Suzie Q as her pups are almost as old as me. I think you'll really like it....Don't let the neck intimidate you....just give it some time...after all, the neck's girth = sustain! Congrats!

I wanted to provide an update after having this guitar a little over a week. The neck is great! Lee told me to not be intimidated by it, so I just went for it. I didn't think I'd like the neck as much as I do, but it has really grown on me. Now, I like it better than that one on my '17 LP Standard. I've been playing it through my Therapy and Cure and it's great through both. I want to get it through a MAZ, but they are upstairs and I can't pick them up yet. My Carmen Ghia is on loan. Oh, I need to get the Monza out for this thing! But, all of that will have to wait a few more weeks while I recover. The P90's have their own thing going on with them that I think is fantastic. They will scream with overdrive and clean up really well by just turning the GV down. I really love them! I've never had a guitar with P90s. I had a Gibson semi-hollow with P100s (had a dummy coil) in the '90s and they didn't sound like these P90s. I have a Grosh that has his ElectraSonics in it, but they are more like a fat Strat pickup. So, these P90's are completely different than anything I've ever had. I've had a pretty good experience so far. I can see more P90 guitars in my future.

That’s a beautiful Lester! I don’t know why I’ve been obsessed with Gibson here lately. I’ve got two new Gibson guitars within months of each other and I can say that the craftsmanship is outstanding on both of them.
I’m really thinking about one like this one with the p90s. Seeing yours only makes it hard to refrain lol. That gold top is beautiful!

That's a beautiful guitar. Always wanted a gold-top, but settled back in 1970 for a used deluxe sunburst and that was my main axe for many years. When I could afford to purchase more guitars I went different routes, but after seeing this thread the burning desire has been reignited. I've played my deluxe more lately and have appreciated the glory of the Les Paul again. Enjoy your new friend.
