Hi all,
I'm the owner of a Z Wreck combo with the half power switch. Pretty sure it's hardwired in the 'Speed' setting.
A few weeks ago it developed a problem. After playing for an hour at loud, gig volume, it began to fluctuate in output level. It happened as we were performing Mustang Sally, I mention this because it is important later on. I managed to limp through the last song of the set, powered off the amp, checked the fuses (none blown), replaced the power tubes and it performed flawlessly through the second 60 minute set.
Friday night, exactly at the same point in the set - Mustang Sally - the amp went completely dark. I mean, the literal exact same point in the set. This time I had no sound and the pilot light was out. I flipped over to my backup AC30 and powered the Z Wreck off. I checked the fuses (none blown) and replaced ALL of the tubes including the rectifier and preamp tubes during the break. It made it through the last set with no issues again.
I was thinking the amp may be overheating. I didn't have a gig last night, so I fired up the amp and jammed along to backing tracks. Wouldn't you know after about an hour, the amp went dark again. No power, no sound, no pilot light, not abnormally hot.
Three different sets of tubes (1 Sovtek set, 1 Mullard set, 1 Russin spec 6N14N's), all exhibiting similar problems at the exact same time - about an hour after powering the amp up and rocking out at close to full bore. Any ideas where to go next? I've never had a tube amp be so precise in its apparent issue.
I'll probably take it to my local repair shop tomorrow.
Jared
