Just swapped my Maz Jr combo into a head and I'm using my 1x12 convertible, as an open back (Celestion Blue).
I'm getting more lows than I was in my combo cab, so I'm wondering if I put a smaller bottom back panel on it if that would help tame the lows a little bit?? Maybe put the middle section, that makes it a closed back, where the bottom section goes?
Has anyone ever experimented with trying this?
I know I can turn the lows down, but there's just a certain frequency that is there now that wasn't before and it's in the low-mid range. Dialing the lows down too much, with the knob, takes some character away from the feel of the amp IMO.

I believe it will change something but the middle section has machine screws so I wouldn’t screw around with that. Try nothing at the bottom or tune the cab to your liking with some acoustic foam. I forget what I used to do, but I think I just threw a t shirt in the bottom for curiosity and kinda liked it. Simple. But I play closed back now so....... happy experimenting!

You might end up having to go on a speaker journey to figure out which responds best. I know my 2x10 cab has a lot more bass than my 1x12 cab. Both have a gold in it with the 2x10 also having a z 10” in conjunction.

Combo cabinets and speaker cabs respond differently. I’ve got a Blue in my ZPlus cab, and running a Z12 in a Z convertible 1x12.
I would never say the Blue has a lot of low end - to my ears it’s pretty bright. The Z12 is more balanced, definitely more low end, whether that’s more than cab or the speaker I can’t say, but I suspect more the speaker. I have the middle section of that cab open.
At the risk of stating the obvious, I’d try resetting the tone controls by ear and not eye now that you have a head/cab configuration. I would not expect the tone settings to stay the same.

I would love to know your take on the difference between 2-z10's, and the combo of gold and z. As as for the twelve I found I like the WHS Blackhawk in my 1x12. I am running it closed back, which is a different sound but less bass. Try it you might like it.

The 10” gold took some of the earth moving bass out and shifted it towards the higher end clarity/chime. I’ve found Golds are good for “lifting the blanket” if you will for darker amps (Db4/Z28). They may not be your best option for say a Stangray or Maz amplifier though. Again though, after that speaker swap I was able to bump the bass up 1-2 notches, not much but it was some.

A Eq pedal would work.

Tumnus Deluxe or Timmy both work well as a semi eq/boost pedal. I run each on separate boards for this purpose.

Out of curiosity, what are your tone settings?

Out of curiosity, what are your tone settings? I've been messing around with different tone settings. When it was a combo, I had it like this: Bass: 11:00 Mids: 11:00 Treb: 12:00 Cut: 9:00 For the head/cab, I have it like this: bass: 10:00 mids: 11:30 Treb: 12:00 Cut: 10:00 Not much different, but somewhat. If I turn the bass much lower, I loose the snap/pop I love from popping the low strings against my fretboard. I'm not going to judge much more, until this Sunday when I play a small outdoor gig with it (for about 100-200 people). After a live show, that will show me where I'm at and where I need to be.
