Hello, I’m a new Z Plus owner and forum user. Was interested to know pup suggestions for a 2002 PRS Custom 22. I bought it with a seymour duncan Pearly Gates in the neck I believe and a seymour duncan in the bridge(not sure what model). It sounds to thin for me, great rythym tones but is lacking significantly in the lead department. I am looking for a meatier more Gibson like tone. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to stay with Duncans, a Jazz in the neck will give you a nice clean sound really close to a single coil and a custom 5 in the bridge is a 59 on steroids. Fatter than a Pearly gates with a few less highs. Though if it isn't a pearly gates in the bridge of yours, I think they sound good. Pearly in the neck with the fatter bridge may be fine. I have the first combo in my go to PRS CE 24.

I put the BarryBucker in the bridge and the FullBucker in the neck of my McCarty - love it. And they sound very good when split for single coil as well. www.amalfitanopickups.com/pickups.php

Thanks for the feedback. Now I have some where to start researching. I was also wondering how hard it is to change the 5-way rotary switch to a three way toggle. I can’t stand the rotary nob!

It's not that hard. I've done one. The only problem was that the hole for the 5way was a little too small for every 3 way toggle I tried, so it had to be reamed out a bit.

With the 5way to 3way toggle mod does the toggle need to be right angle and are there any companies/brands you’d recommend? Has anyone tried the RS Guitar Works electronics upgrade kits?

Needed to be right angle. I usually go with switchcraft. I know the guys at RS, saw them at a guitar show a few weeks ago. Their stuff is good. I haven't tried their upgrade kits. I just piece things together myself.

If your gonna put in 4 wire pickups to split, your going to have to get a PRS push/pull tone pot to achieve this if your taking out the rotary. welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the feedback. Now I have some where to start researching. I was also wondering how hard it is to change the 5-way rotary switch to a three way toggle. I can’t stand the rotary nob! I'm with you on the rotary knob. My '89 PRS sits in the case because of that 5-way. Thought about sending it in to PRS for reconfiguration to standard tone control and change out the sweet switch to a 3-way toggle. Just never got around to it.

I had one with the sweet switch. Put a stacked dual pot in the place of the volume pot so I had tone and volume on the same pot. Left the sweet switch in. It still worked and I liked having it. Left the 5-way in that one, as I like some of the combos you can't get with a 3-way, especially the inside coils of both pickups in series.

I never thought of that, because what I dislike is the lack of a tone control. I must look into this. Thanks for sharing.
