General rule is that you can go from a lower impedance OUTPUT of the amp into a HIGHER impedance speaker/cab -- that is, use the 8 ohm output of the amp into a 16 ohm speaker/cab (or 4 oh into 8 or 16 ohm, etc) "safely." Every amp may be different but generally going "higher" protects the output transformer. It can/will affect the tone of the amp and make the amp run less efficiently - you won't get the rated power with a mismatch. Running into a lower speaker cab (using the 16 ohm amp output into an 8 ohm speaker/cab) *can* damage the output transformer. A lot depends on the quality of the transformer as to how susceptible it will be to damage, how hard you run the amp, and for how long. That said, I have inadvertently connected my Therapy and Z28 heads the wrong way before; and played a while before realizing it -- no damage, but I wouldn't recommend it (and I double check now every time I connect the heads to the cabs - going so far as to use colored electrical tape on the correct output so its idiot proof - some would say "DaddyElmis proof").
