Anyone tried 6n14n tubes in an M12?
As it's supposed to be a kin to a 'half powered Z-Wreck', I was wondering if it's worth a shot...or would that just alter the clean headroom pedal platform idea?

I have tried them in my M12 head. They are a tad warmer than a standard el84 but did not totally change the character of the amp. Ain’t gonna make it sound like a Z wreck if that’s what you’re hoping. I know I was Nothing life changing but they are nice. Major feature is that they last forever. Hypothetically 10X longer than new production 84’s I have tried the ones from the tube store. One of them drifted/died on me fairly quickly less than 100 hours. If I get more, I would buy them from Perry, who is a favorite 6n14n dealer here on the forum. Here’s his Reverb shop. Sells pairs and quads. Literally the exact tubes Doc uses. reverb.com/shop/rogue-8If you want to lower headroom, the JJ EL844’s are a cheap experiment. Around $25 for a pair and lower the headroom 25%.

Thanks for the replies.
I wasn't thinking it would turn my M12 into a Z-Wreck but was hoping for a little more warmth. I made the swap and it does seem to have warmed the amp a little but not dramatically so. I also put a set of 6n14n's in my 2011 MAZ 18 NR for good measure.
Like the idea they'll last longer too.

Awesome. Well they sure will accomplish that!
I’ve found the EF86 to be the most drastic tone shaper. Could try a few options there as well to warm things up. I really like the RFT. A more affordable NOS option. The stock Winged C is good also, but has a very “round” tone. Almost a little tubby in the mids. And stays VERY clean. If you want a tad less mids, and more crunch, NOS tubes have served me well in that.

Yes! Just ordered a quartet and a pair of 6n14n off Perry's Reverb site. Thanks for the info!

I just ran off the manual for the Maz ... I was surprised to see power tube recommendations: For Maz 18 - 6n14n but for the 38, EL 84.
I have a quartet of 6n14n to install ... I'm wondering why the variance in the manual?

I'm wondering why the variance in the manual? That's an interesting distinction (and good catch!). I wonder if DRZ could advise about why there would be a difference between what's spec'ed for the 18 vs. the 38. I don't have a MAZ 38 to confirm, but I guess I was under the assumption that all MAZ amps were getting the 6n14n when he started putting them in the MAZ 18's.

On YouTube, he said that they felt the EL 84s sounded better in the 38s. I’ll install tomorrow and let you know what I conclude.

Anybody know if by being “warmer” they take any of the chime away from the Maz amps?

I use them in all of my Z EL84 amps and they all chime like nobody’s business. Really noticeable in the Maz 8 and 18. Don’t have a 38 though. They add some low end and are tough as nails.

I changed the JJ's out of the Maz 38 Mark I with the 6n14n quartet ... They sound wonderful ... tight low end, beautiful, rounded top end. To my ears, the differences are subtle ... not pronounced enough to hear within a live gig for sure. The JJ's sounded fine but since they were the original 2009 tubes I wanted to try the 6n14n and know I had new power tubes that are known to be sonically vetted and tough as nails.
By the way, I had new Groove Tube 12AX7s and a new Mesa rectifier tube ready to replace ... but when I saw the originals were all Russian Sovtec, I left them in! I'd like to find three nos 12AX7s to have on hand for future maintenance. For now, the Maz 38 is all I could ask for! Love it!

Do most agree that the 6n14n's will last longer too?

Do most agree that the 6n14n's will last longer too? Older manufactured tubes (prior to the 80’s) generally last longer. 6n14xxx is the Russian designation for EL84. Basically the same tube. Depending upon which ones, I think they have a stronger upper mid push and more headroom… though tonal differences in power tubes are pretty subtle. Adjustments for tone will be more successful in the preamp part of the circuit. PS: as I recall, the 6n14’s were a favorite of Ken’s… so it makes sense to use them in the zwreck and zwreckjr. They aren’t as available as JJ’s or their modern tubes.
