All,
I have been collecting some parts to upgrade my Strat. It is an American Special Strat, bought it last year. I have pickups, pickguard, and some locking tuners.
I plan on blocking the trem with a simple wood block - in that case does it make any sense to upgrade the tremelo bridge piece to a stainless steel version ? Or something else ?
If the trem is blocked will the bridge material make any real difference?
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks, Gray

When you say bridge piece do you mean the saddles, the block, or the entire tremolo? You might get a little more sustain and some added brightness with stainless saddles, and you'd add a smidge more weight if you went stainless with the block or the entire trem. I'd be tempted to stick with the original if you're going to block it--the only upgrade that would interest me might be to go with a Callaham replacement trem with a pop-in arm, which is a handy thing to have vs the screw-in variety, but as I say--no point if you're going to block it.

I was thinking of the block that is inside the body more so than the saddles.
I really dont plan on using the tremelo system at all.

I don’t see any real advantage to switching out the block in that case.

I agree that I’m not sure changing the bridge would be that beneficial if you’re blocking the trem (making it a hardtail) - unless there’s something wrong with the current bridge or saddles. That said, I put a Callaham on my ‘81 strat when the stock trem block cracked and I love it - not a hardtail. If I were going hardtail I’d consider this: www.callahamguitars.com/strat_bridge_amstdhardtail_catalog.htm

I'd just block it and leave the parts as is. I tried blocking a Strat's trem a long time ago and didn't like the way it felt or sounded, for what it's worth. I love the resonance that the balanced tremolo gives to the sound. It's only a problem if you need to go to drop D tuning.
