It’s been 19 years now since this film was released, and it still holds a high rotation spot in my library, and in fact, the film I’ve viewed the most. I just can’t help watching it over and over again. I never get tired of the theme and the action that takes place. Connery and Baldwin make you feel the concern and the emotion that they bring to the characters. There’s also a lot of truth when it comes to the political climate between our country and the former Soviet Union.
This film earns my WOW rating!

Mine too, once I get past the Russian Captain with the Scottish accent thing. Connery's acting in this role makes it easy to overlook though. I watch it at least once a year.

Loved that movie and book. Plus, a friend was one of the Russian sailors. I think he had a line saying "yes" or something.

Love that movie.
Was always disappointed that they never made Red Storm Rising - that could’ve been up there with The Longest Day, Midway, and other great epic war movies.

Connery is such a great actor, the Scottish accent doesn't really come to the forefront, or the actor for that matter. He makes the character come alive and believable.

“Your Russian's going to make it to America, Mr. Ryan. He's going to die within sight of it.”
Love it.

I read the book first, and I remember being really disappointed when I saw the movie. Books can always add so much more. But I've come to like the flick.

A friend of mine urged me that the book would be worth it. He was right. Maybe that's the trick. See the movie, and then read the book.

Love that movie, love the book more,I'm a re-reader,and have read it 4-5 times so far.I love sub movies in general, even U-571 which isn't very good.Might have something to do with my brother doing 11 years of sub duty, and a few more as an instructor in the previously mentioned Groton base. BTW,anyone going through sub school scrubs out if they can't pass the flood tank test, which f-ing terrifies me. www.cnet.com/pictures/submarine-escape-training-and-a-classic-sub-photos/

I'm involved with a new band project and we're working on trying to come up with a name. I kinda like "One Ping Only" - ha!

I read the book first, and I remember being really disappointed when I saw the movie. Books can always add so much more. But I've come to like the flick. That happened for me John when I read The Firm. It was such a great book, but when I saw the film, they changed the ending drastically. I walked away very disappointed. But I guess they took license for the sake of sensationalism.

A friend of mine is a nuclear engineer who works for a Navy subcontractor and he trains the guys who run the reactors on the subs. My friend has been on the American sub used on the movie. In fact he even used the head (although he expressed it in slightly more colorful terms).

I just finished a two week work hitch on a drilling rig with a retired Navy submarine guy. He is now working as an IT tech with the same company i work for and was a sonar tech (think jonsey on the Red October)on several subs during his 20yr run. We had quite a few good conversations when we could get him to talk! . He was on the USS Georgia. This is a TRIDENT Class Neuclear Powered Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine! I was in "awe" most of the time! He told us some really interesting stuff! Very Strange this should happen after we've been talking "Red October"?
