So I got my Maz 18 NR not too long ago and have loved the look. Something just really caught me with it. My Therapy and Ghia have been blond, and I thought maybe my Maz is just a little aged. I got my blond 210 today and next to the Maz, the Maz is definitely more of a brown. Does anyone know if they ever did a run of actual brown tolex or is my amp just aged? I like them both, I've just never seen anything like my Maz before.
Maz is on top, 210 is on the bottom.

I've never seen a brown Z amp, I've got to guess that it's aged. Kind of strange, though. They usually lighten with age, dont't they? It'd take a LOT of cigarettes to turn a blonde amp brown!

I was kinda thinking the smoke thing, however it doesn't stink. The pipping is a little darker than normal too. I'll try and get a good photo in the day light that shows the difference. I know they're going all black, but if this is an aging thing, they should do a limit run with brown. It looks killer.

Never heard of "Brownface" brown (like Maddog's beauty above) before on a Z amp. I do know that some of the early blonde Zs turned a bit pinkish with time. Maybe someone had it re-tolexed at some point?

I think this is a combination of age and the 'pinking' of the tolex because of the glue used at the time, maybe?

This could be his brother from the same run. If it has darkened over time something like the glue used would make sense, it is very uniform in color, not what you would expect if it were from smoke.

UV light will have an affect on tolex as well. Also it's most likely tolex and piping from a different run and or supplier. One mans blond is another mans brunette.

Seems like the older blonde Z amps got the "pinks" with age - don't know if that's a glue thing or a tolex thing though.

I got a buddy who has a Z best and a Z28 in this off color. Was just at his place today playing through them. I don’t think it is aged. It’s just a different color tolex. It actually has the blonde valence on the Z28. But the rest is sort of a salmon beige. He thought they were a rare off color tolex, like a batch that came out incorrectly. Or maybe Z tried them and hated them but didn’t want to pay to retolex.

Here they are. No idea what year they. Z28 outside and z best is clearly different color. imgur.com/a/kq7OKXf

Whatever it is, I love it. I got my chassis back from the Dr yesterday with the mkii update. After reinstalling it in the cab and playing for a while it was over in the corner of the living room. The darker color with the brown piping is hot. Most of my Z’s have been blonde, but this one is gorgeous.

I had an earlier blonde Maz 18, and it did that pinkening thing. Not as dark as the one above, though.

I'm late to this. I have a 2006 Maz Jr that's like this too. Brown piping and everything. I think it has to do with the glue that was being use for tolex at that time. It was a red glue if I recall. I think there is an old thread on this forum where this came up.

Yeah looks like pink tolex to me too. I had a route and maz that did the same thing didn't really bother me but I did recover them so I could sell them. They looked brand new when I sold them.
