Looking for something that can coax a bit of early-70's crunch out of the Cure. Suggestions?

For any amp, really:
JTM 45: Z-Vex Box of Rock (or Vexter version) Plexi: J. Rockett Animal JCM 800: MI Audio Crunch Box or JHS Angry Charlie

I didn't try all that many compared to some, but my favorite was the Box of Rock. Excellent "clean" boost side also.

Man--there's a bunch of 'em. My current fave is the Friedman Dirty Shirley (the pedal, not the amp). But even your basic OCD will get you in the ballpark.

I use it with the Cure, Maz 8, and the Z28 I had (even my Remedy when I had to play at low volumes). The J Rockett stuff seems to have a big jump in volume after 8 o:clock but it's doable! You can find them used for about $100.00 to $125.00 so it's not a big risk.

The Cure doesn’t need pedals, but if I’m running mine clean, I use the Z-Drive. ;>)

I have a Friedman BE-OD, but not a Cure. It sounds like a Marshall, but most of the time I don’t want that. That’s why I bought the pedal.

Wampler Plexidrive and Or OCD are my go to’s. They stack really well also.

I have owned and liked the J. Rockett Animal and the Wampler Plexidrive. My current MIB pedal is the lowly Nobels Mini ODR-1. I like it so much I have TWO of them on my board, mounted in one box. It goes from JTM 45 territory to JCM 800.

Rocket 45 is great for jam tones too. My buddy plays a Princeton and his whole rig is centered around that pedal. It's definitely on the lower gain side of things. Also have one of these for sale if you are interested. I'm about 90% sure its a slightly tweaked Angry Charlie clone. I've personally A/B'd them. Brown Sugar is more open feeling and can do the plexi thing better, in addition to the JCM800 stuff. AC is pretty lousy without the gain knob high.

Carl martin Plexitone/ the small newer one. Gain monster. But I do sometimes favor my velvet fuzz set to distortion in the cure.

It is just a 1590BB Hammond box, bare aluminum, no paint. I pulled the boards from the original boxes and transferred the hole patterns to the larger box. That was the tricky part but I have some experience laying out and machining castings. I hardwired the power and signal connections between the boards.

Dirty Shirley is my favorite. I love my nobels ODR-1 also but it adds a lot of bass.
