In a thread in the NOVA section, a question about bias was asked. Doc gave us this tip to potentially avoid a trip to a tech for biasing the NOVA and Z Master when replacing output tubes:
The Z Master is Fixed Bias not self bias. So a bias adjustment is needed. A little hint buy the 5881’s from New Sensor And ask for range 38 to 40 they will drop in no adjustment needed Matched set’s Same for the NOVA.
Z
I contacted The Tube Store and they told me EH/New Sensor didn't make a 5881 (they do have 6L6) and they also weren't familiar with the rating system Doc had mentioned.
Has anyone else found a source for these tubes? Not being a tech, I'd like to avoid a bench charge if it's as simple as buying the correct tubes.

Well, Lou yes they do. Mike Mathews owner of New sensor manufactured and released the RI Tung-Sol 5881. Order online from New Sensor Matched pair , Rated between 38 and 40. That's how I order them, works for me.

I was just looking at a matched set of 5881 tubes on the Electro-Harmonix site. This is what came up when I searched for New Sensor tubes. The site states "MATCHED TUBES NOTICE: Special-range matched tubes are not available during the current tube shortage" for the Tung Sol 5881.
Given that I can't request the special range that Doc recommends (rated between 38 and 40) would it be recommended to just visit a amp tech and have the tubes replaced and rebiased? Unless I ordered a set and I got lucky and the rating is in that range. Is the rating usually noted on the package?

Given the issue that you mentioned in your thread about your amp, I would take the amp to a tech to make sure that no other damage has occurred due a failing tube as well as having the bias set for new power tubes. It'd be minor damage, if any damage at all, but it'd give you peace of mind and protect the amp for years to come.

Here in Cleveland, it’s almost impossible to even FIND someone to bias an amp anymore.

Here in Cleveland, it’s almost impossible to even FIND someone to bias an amp anymore. That's why I encourage players to get a couple of tools and learn how to do it themselves. It's really not that hard, just follow the procedure and remember safety.
