So i've always loved my Z-28. It's well documented here that I've considered trading or selling it a few times in moments of weakness. This past month or so has been tough with the amp because it would go dead on me sometimes and i didn't know why. It was actually really concerning.
Finding a good local amp tech who charges fair prices in southern california is scary and difficult. I went with my gut and some reviews on a local guy about 25 minutes away from my house. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the amp. I checked the fuse, and it was fine. The power tubes were glowing, so i didn't think those were the problem either.
I plugged into the amp today in the morning and no sound came out. Distraught and desperate, i decided to call this guy up.
I took the amp to him at around 1pm. He saw that one of the power tube sockets were damaged which led to the power tube drawin in way too much current. He was telling me the bias was unstable and would go up to 60 mA! This led to damage of the power tubes as well.
So i dropped the amp off at around 1pm. He diagnosed the problem, replaced the power tube socket, and replaced my 6v6 tubes with NOS GE 6v6's. He biased the amp to 28mA and confirmed it was stable at that bias. He finished the job in 3 hours and i was able to bring the amp home and plug it in same day. Great service!
WOW. It sounds like a completely different amp! So lively! my god. EVERYTHING about the amp sounds better. All of my pedals have new life through it. My ripply fall chorus and phase sound so articulate, clear, and just phenomenal. My delays, reverbs, trem have just taken new life. I don't know why i waited so long to take the amp in! All this work with parts cost me only $132. Man. I am so pleased with the results and can't see myself parting with this amp anytime soon!

What's his name and where is he located? There's a guy in La Crescenta - Gregs Amp Repair, and he does great work. He used to do repairs for Trutone Music - maybe still does, but it is always good to have other references.

In the years past, when I had a problem I would take the amp to one of two guys.
On two different occasions with each vendor it took 3-5 weeks to get a diagnosis. I was crawling out of my skin both times, and that was $80 for a diagnosis only.
Sounds like Greg is the man.

That’s a great price, especially considering he outfitted you with GE NOS 6v6s. That’s worth the price alone. Great tech!!

I’m stunned at how quickly he diagnosed the problem and how quickly he fixed it! 3 hr turn around time is unreal. All my pedals sound different now. It’s pretty unreal

A few years ago I took an amp to him to install a MV on it. When I called him to get some info re it he realized that I lived in Redlands at the time so when I arrived (pretty interesting home he has, huh?) he told me to go get some breakfast and that he would do it while I waited. I did some Yelp reviews while I was at breakfast and his reviews are top notch (deservedly)!
