I've read up about the difference, watched the AMA about it, and the MkII changes are overwhelmingly awesome. I've yet to read of someone NOT liking the change. I also know Dr Z does upgrades to older Maz Jrs for $199.
I have a Z28 now. Looking to add Z #2 and there's a lot of older Maz 18s out there. I've yet to see a MkII on Craigslist anywhere near me. Is there anything WRONG with getting an older one? Are there better years, better speaker configurations, etc?

Man to my ears its still way up on the totem compared to a lot that's out there...2013-14 and on up will be detachable power and eq bypass able which gives you an another solid option...wont even get into speakers but yeah you wouldn't be hurtin to go with older model...still a solid leader imho.

Nothing wrong with a Mk.I Maz Jr... I would have been fine without the update/upgrade, but love it with the upgrade just a little more.
If you don't care about the EQ bypass, then any year will be a good year. If you want the EQ bypass, those started around 2013 or 2014. Same with the detachable power cable (as stated above, started about the same time).
There's a bunch of different speaker configurations out there too... I got a 2018 Mk.I with a Blue, that I sent in for the Mk.II update. Mine was listed as Mk.II..... I was a little disappointed, but still a good deal regardless of the model.

I've got a Mk I NR that I got as my first Z in 2001 or so. I love that amp. If your situation lets you turn up the amp and get the power tubes going it can be a great amp for you in it's stock configuration.

Like the fellas say, it's a great amp in any configuration. Mine started out life as a 2017 MK1, then did the conversion to MKII. I like to say it makes a great amp legendary. The Master Volume improvement alone is worth the price of admission, it's unbelievably good.

My Z28 1x12 combo has the Z Brake Lite. I use it literally all the time. I want something a little more feature rich/less simple, but with a MV where I DONT need another Brakelite. I'm thinking EL84+cathode bias is substantially different than 6V6+fixed bias. I played a gig last year thru a guys Maz18 plugged straight in. Didnt have much time to tweak it "for me" but just set it how I "thought" I'd like it and I sounded like "me."
So the 2013-14 models....is that when the font on the faceplate was changed?

I had a 2012 Maz 18 NR. It had the detachable power cord, effects loop, and EQ Bypass. I eventually sold it in 2017 because of its weight.
I bought a Maz 18 MKII Reverb in 2018 and everything about it is great. I bought the studio combo this time, so weight is not an issue. The reverb is dead quiet and lush. But the new master volume is the crown jewel.

What's a fair price range for a Maz 18 JR MKI head w/Reverb in excellent shape?

Nothing at all wrong with getting an older one. Especially if you are going to run it with the Master up at least 2:00, which is where mine lived at live gigs.

I have a MKI MAZ 18 NR. I love this amp and was ready to do the MKII update. i guess the question about upgrading for me is can i still get the same tones? the master volume upgrade looks okay but it's seldom that i ever have the master below noon (using a brake lite). What control do I lose? Can I pick and choose which parts of the MKII update I want but pay the same price? (like maybe not the master volume. that would be cool) I just don't want to get the update and feel like it's a different amp. what if i want it back and can't find one because everybody upgraded (doc could market a downgrade). maybe i need two Maz 18 NR.

I just had my Maz 18 nr head modded and I can say that the amp sounds much more versatile. For example I use to have my tone knobs completely dialed at 10 with my strat. After the mod I found that my guitar had more control over the overall sound of the amp, which I believe is a great thing. So I would say it's definitely an upgrade from the already amazing amp that it was. I didn't find that I lost anything in particular but I gained so much more versatility.

So the 2013-14 models....is that when the font on the faceplate was changed? Faceplate change was present on Jul 2011 Maz 18 Jr NR. This version had the external visible Nov 2011 updates. Nov 2011 - USA ETL standard . CSA Certification (Rectifier tube relocated, IEC AC Cord) ztalk.proboards.com/thread/45310/dr-amps-etl-csa-certified - detachable AC cord - new front and rear panels - 6V incandescent pilot light instead of 120V neon - Footswitchable EQ Bypass

Cool, digs...yer gonna love it. Is yours the NR or reverb model? Mines an NR and the Master Volume alone blew me away. Sounds great, I wouldn't go back. Looking forward to hearing what you think.

How does the master compare to the Cure? I love the Maz 18 but it never worked at home for me.

I found the Maz 18 Reverb MKII Master Volume to be as good as the Cure Level control. I bought mine in a Studio Combo and sold my Cure.
