I love the Gold I use with my Z-Wreck head. But it is a 100db speaker. Is there a similar speaker to the Gold out there that sounds fantastic and has a lower DB rating?

Scumback has a couple of AlNiCo speakers, both with a sensitivity rating of 98dB. One is similar to a Vox Silver AlNiCo and the other is like a Celestion Blue. Contact Scumback to see which one fits your need.

I wonder about the Creamback M. Ceramic magnet I know. But the greenback sound isn't all that far off from the blue/gold tone. Yes, I know it's not the same...but compared to a V30 or a G12H....the greenback/blue/gold are in the same ball park. The creamback is known for a little more bass, so that might throw you off. Perhaps not as much upper and top end sparkle. But if you can try one out, I'd be interested in what you think. and at 97db..it's a LOT quieter. When I had my stangray, I used the creamback...and it was acceptable enough, especially considering the volume reduction. I guess how ever many points you'd deduct for the creamback not sounding exactly like a gold was less than the points added for the 3db reduction in volume.
When I sold my stangray, the buyer called me a while later and asked why he wasn't getting that 'Brad Paisley' tone that I was getting when I showed him the amp. I asked what speakers he was using. After he told me, I said "Get something in the blue/gold/greenback' camp.

The new-ish Celestion V-Type is exactly this. I am not kidding. Did my own A/B with a Gold and the V-Type through a Radial cab-switcher and I'd defy anyone to really know the difference (aside from a slight volume drop with the V-Type).

I just bought the Marshall SV20H head and matching 112 cab and that cab has that Celestion V speaker in it I thought that I wasn't going to like it and I was planning on getting a Creamback M-65 to replace it but that V speaker sounds great. I heard thats its like a cross between a Vintage 30 and a Greenback. I am actually shocked that I like it because I don't like the Vintage 30 at all. I also had the Alnico Cream in a few cabs and in my Z-28 before I sold it. That Alnico cream is a nice sounding speaker as well its like a cross between the Gold and the Blue. It has a better bass response and it has a smoother top end than the gold its rich sounding very vintage in character. But its 100 db too.

I looked up the V-type speaker. It's only got a 31oz magnet. That's a whole lot closer to the greenback's (and creamback) 35oz magnet than it is to the V30 & G12H big 50oz magnet. A larger magnet allows for beefier, firm lows and higher headroom. So I'm starting to like what I hear about the V-type. I think part of why I've liked the greenback for years is it's smaller magnet. It breaks up earlier because of this.

I tested my Z-28 that i just sold through that Marshall cab with the V speaker and it sounded exactly how you are describing it it had plenty of headroom but it didn't have that overwhelming bass like a vintage 30 has and it was not overly bright either. The bass was beefier and firm. It is a well balanced speaker.

I have one of those just lying around, so I am going to give it a try.

Not sure of the timeframe, but celestion has a Ruby coming out to be specifically between the Blue and Gold... 35watts, but still 100dB so not sure. Just thought I would mention. celestion.com/product/216/Celestion_Ruby/

But if you can try one out, I'd be interested in what you think.
John, I did try it out today. I pulled the Z-12 out of the cab I use with my Z-Lux head and put the Creamback in. The first thing I noticed is that I couldn't tell the difference and that it sounded great. Then I plugged the amp into the cab with the Gold, and I did hear the difference. The Creamback had more bass, but I can EQ that out. There was something else that was different about it, but I don't know how to explain it. I did a quick recording with my Zoom just to listen back to it and they did sound different, but it wasn't a big difference. The Wreck still sounded fantastic with the CB. The 3db I save using the Creamback, just might be the perfect solution for smaller venues, especially if I use the BL on one click. I have one of those coming up in a couple of weeks, and I am going to try it out at that gig and see the difference there. It really is hard to tell in a non-gigging environment for me.

Good to hear. I figured you could eq out the bass. And as far as that thing you can't explain...yeah, it's that upper mid and low-high presence the blue/gold have. As you said, the creamback is close. And with a little adjusting, you can get acceptably close enough in tone. But that extra 3db reduction more than makes up for any adjustment in tone.
Of course, if you A/B immediately back and forth, yes, you'll tell the difference. If you A/B 24 hours apart, no I don't think someone would. And if you're playing at live band volume, no, I don't think you could tell the difference. And let's face it...NO ONE...absolutely NO ONE in the audience will tell the difference...and even if they could, NO ONE will care. Like I said, they're not the same, but in the same ball park. Being able to run the Wreck in it's sweet spot is worth a slight change in speaker tone. Have you thought about an amp shield?

"...Have you thought about an amp shield?"
No I have not. The Wreck being too loud has never really been much of a problem. I typically use it in larger venues where it isn't an issue. But there are times when it has been an issue. If I was playing my Z-Lux, I would just turn down the master. But with the Wreck, I might play with the BL on 2 or turn the volume down and get my dirt more from a pedal. I think the CB will give me the flexibility at smaller venues. I will know ahead of time and just bring that cabinet. I am going to do this upcoming show with the CB and see. But I agree with you, nobody in the crowd is going to come up to me and say "your tone was missing some high end sparkle and I detected a slight increase in the bass frequencies. Are you using a Creamback instead of a Gold?"

Hey John, I did get to try this out a gig last weekend and it worked great. The Wreck sounded like the Wreck and it was less loud. It was a tiny club, with a tiny stage and I was glad I brought it instead of the Gold cabinet. So I think I have found an acceptable answer to Gold when playing the Wreck in a small room. Thanks for the idea!
