So I was playing my Cure yesterday and head a loud pop come from the amp, figure it was something from my board and didn't think much of it. Though after playing for a bit I started to smell a weird electrical burn smell and could tell it was coming from the amp when I smelled the back of it. I shut it down and unplugged it pending taking to an amp tech. It was still operational after the pop but didn't want to take any chances on further damage.
Anyone have any thoughts what it could be? Expected cost?
Bonus points if anyone has any good amp tech suggestions in the KC metro area. I will prob take it to a shop in downtown Lawrence, KS that has worked on my stuff before otherwise.

When I saw the subject line I thought you were talking about someone's father.
But re the Cure, if you are able to take the chassis out and take a few close up pics of the layout some one here may be able to see if the culprit is a resistor or some other electrical component. It is also possible it could be a tube taking a hit and giving up the ghost. The best thing to do is email or call Don in repairs at the Z shop.
Keep us posted on what you find out! And, welcome to the forum!!

Yes, take the chassis out and look to see if any of the components look burnt. Posting several 'close up' pictures here on the forum is a good idea. But my money is still on a tube going bad.
When you turn the amp on, do any of the tubes look brighter (orange?) than others? Or even darker?

Oh no I hope the magic smoke didn't all get out!
Seriously though, hope it is something minor. Not fun.

Did you ever sort out your problem? I had the exact same thing happen; Crackle, smoke smell but fuse did not blow. I pulled the chassis, no sign of burned components. I talked to Don on the Z tech support line. He said probably a powertube. I replaced one and the amp worked as normal, but.... now there was a slight hum at idle. Back to Don, he said I need a matched pair of 6v6. So, I bought a new set of matched 6v6s and now it hums even louder. Before all this, it was dead quiet.

maybe something burned out but is not visibly apparent. someone might have to measure the resistor values to make sure everything is still in spec, and that a cap didn't get damaged.

See my description, two posts up. Don on the tech support line was very helpful. I ended up sending the chassis in to Dr Z. They replaced 5 resistors some of which were most likely damaged when one of the power tubes went bad. The resistors are across the terminals on the power tube sockets. They were replaced with new ones that look different. I have Cure serial number 4, so perhaps they have changed up some since then. Anyway, happy to have it back now. I watched the Dr Z shop tour on YouTube and actually saw Don and his workstation for repairs which was kind of cool.

He's worked on a number of my amps - they don't get much better than Don!
