I’ve been super curious about the therapy for a while now. I may have an opportunity to trade my z-28 for one. Anyone do this before and regret it? I love the extra headroom of the therapy and it’s awesome ppimv (based on reports). Just don’t want to make a mistake and regret letting my z-28 go. Can’t afford both so don’t say that! Lol

Both!!
Hard choice, I love both amps.
The Z28 has a more unique voice.
The Therapy is a bit more versatile with the master volume and it will overdrive more.
The Z28 has an edge of breakup tone that is just killer.
I dont know . . . .

Weigh the option that the '28 is hard to find, no longer in production and the therapy is usually only available as a head. Those are factors to consider with your decision. Both are great amps.

My two Z heads are the Z-28 and the Therapy. I don't know what kind of music you play, or at what volumes. The Z-28 is still my favorite Z model after all these years. I'm on my second one after letting the first one go several years ago and missing it. I think you will always be able to find either model used down the road if you are patient, even if the Z-28 is now discontinued. I have no idea whether trading a Z-28 combo for a Therapy head makes sense from a comparative value standpoint. Good luck with your decision. pcns just summed it up pretty well and there were some insightful posts comparing the two amps in my "How is everyone feeling about their Therapy?" thread a while back

I’ve owned both as well and currently have the Therapy. I did not have them at the same time so I can’t help with that. But it really depends on your needs.
The Therapy only comes as a head so if you are loading and unloading you will be adding the cab to your process if your 28’ is a combo. If you play out a lot in moderate venues I think the Z-28 would cut better (mic’ing amps then it won’t matter as much). I think the 28’ just cuts/stands out clearer in a live setting. Now the Therapy does extremely well live but it is a thicker sound.
The other thing the Therapy does extremely well is adapt to any room/venue you need it too. The MV is killer, so if you play more at home or small rooms it’s beter than the 28’. Of course using a airbreak etc. helps the 28’ but the Therapy just adapts better IMO. You can get a great drive plugging straight in and not draw the ire of the family or some family members.
The EQ’s are completely different as well as the magic in that ef-86. The 28’ just sucks up pedals so well, way better than the Therapy. Although, I think all of the Z ef-86 amps are the best platforms in the universe, lol. The Therapy does not suck with pedals just some work better than others.
The 28’ is discontinued but there are plenty out there and will be for a couple years. All the Zs are so well built Keith Richards might be the only thing that could put live them. I want to say that I would do it but that is your decision to make.
Both are really good but are very different.

nmz has both of these amps contrasted pretty well in my experience. As a primarily clean and basement player, our preferences between the two amps differ but his descriptions are on the money. I'm a long time fan of the Brown\Blonde era Fender amps and the 28 has a character that is pretty unique and suits what I like to play. The Therapy is more meat and potatoes and much more flexible with the ability to swap V-1, power tubes and the master volume.
X-acto vs Swiss Army Bowie knife analogy?

If it were me I would sell the combo outright and pick up a head to go with the cab. The therapy doesn’t really appeal to me. Plus, as previously stated there’s none better than the Ef86 with pedals and you love pedals.
