I've been looking off and on for a great Strat for a long time, and I played a Suhr about 5 years ago that really scratched the itch. But I couldn't afford it at the time. So now that I can, I've renewed my search and tried a lot of different Strats. I couldn't fine another one that did it for me until I picked up this Fender Custom Shop 1964 Journeyman model today at a local guitar store. You know when a guitar speaks to you, and this one was screaming...take me home! So I did. Got a great deal on it and I couldn't be happier. It sounds so good. I took my Maz 18NRII with me and everyone in the store was gathering around listening slack-jawed to the combination. People were saying "I never knew how great Z amps are!" Here's a link to one like mine, I got the heavily faded Fiesta Red model. The pickups are great, the bridge one is bright but not ice-picky like a lot of Strats are; it's got lots of body to it. This one's special!

Cool guitar!! Did you riff on Smoke on the Water at GC? No. Metallica Enter Sandman, over and over. I haven't learned Smoke on the Water yet, but I think it is on YouTube...I'll work on it.

Looks great with the plus and the Carvin in oak! Thanks, it sounds and plays better than it looks...I am really happy. No skunk stripe on the back of the neck either, they did the truss rod the old fashioned way.
I guess they must have a little sealant on the back of the neck. It's sanded to look like the finish is worn away and I'm curious about that. They have to have some kind of a sealer on that neck, don't they? The specs say it's all nitro cellulose finish. What ever they did, it feels really slick. It's a great feeling neck to play.

Great find. Congratulations. I had two of the time machine 60's strats with the matching head stock. One in Fiesta and one in Sherwood. They were both great playing and sounding strats. Those pups are the best (non-vintage) Fender ever made that I have played. Enjoy.

Congratulations Dave! Strats have always been my weakness ever since I bought a '65 Sunburst back in '71 (for $250.00). To me that guitar is the reference for any Strat I would want again. I really like the Legacy I have now but it just doesn't have the same feel or vibe that my '65 had. That is one reason I don't visit and play axes like that - it could be detrimental to my cash flow.

Nice one, Dave. I'm still searching for 'the one'. I've had a few pass through my hands, but none to match the '63 Strat I let go in 1981......it was a goodun, but we had two young kids and a big mortgage, so I sold it (along with a Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop), to keep the wolf away from the door. What's a '63 Strat worth now?

Congrats Im a strat guy so I can always appreciate a cool strat! My favorite Strat is my white one that has custom shop 69's. It has a fat tone too it. If you have a lightweight body those pick ups sound really good.

Are you sure it isn't Pank??
I've been playing the same strat since 1984...the only one I've ever owned.

NIIIIICE!! '60s Strats really have something going on and Fender just killed it with a bunch of their CS models.
damn, what a beautiful Strat!

That's a beauty Dave. There really are some great Strats available these days, tempting for sure, but the longer I've owned the three I have, at least 20 years, the more I just want to keep them. There are probably better ones out there, but these have my DNA!

So pretty! I played some crazy Suhr super strat that was a great deal, but didn't want to bring home a Floyd Rose. Maybe one day I'll find that magic strat. Well done!

I realize this is not a new thread, but I've been preoccupied for a bit. There's nothing better than the day you finally get THAT strat; so congrats, Dave.....after many years of searching, I found this one about 20 years ago....a '68 candy tangerine w/ '69 pups....Big ole ugly headstock..... but sounds like Jimi.....

Here's another one I love: a chopped up '59 body with a '64 neck and Frankenstein electronics and hardware..... I gave this one to one of my sons (Mark) years ago, but he recently returned it as he's become an acoustic aficionado.... GREAT sounding strat!!!

Maddog, Candy Tangerine is one of my favorite finishes and those two old "holy grail" bassmans are impressive. Edited to add a pic of my Candy Tangerine (not as impressive as yours). I figured I wasn't side tracking Dave's revived NGD thread at this point.
