Another "too loud but had to have it" purchase. Works well with the airbrake too. I think I prefer it to the Route 66, which always seemed a little dark to me, especially with humbuckers. Presently running into a 2x12" Celestion Gold cabinet. Thinking of maybe substituting a ceramic for one of the golds. I have G12H 55 here somewhere. Might be worth a try?

Congratulations on your new purchase, it's an excellent amp. I haven't tried my KT with a G12H 55, but I've tried it with a G12M 65 Creamback and an Alnico Gold and it sounds great, although the Gold is always more 'present', as it is a more efficient speaker. I have also tried it with a 10" Eminence Ramrod, and it sounds great, even more percussive. I'm sure you'll enjoy your tonal quest. Tons of tone!!

Congrats, man. I, too, think that I prefer the '45 to the '66. Seems a little clearer to me, I guess, especially with humbuckers. If only I had the sonic real estate to need one and/or run it loud. Would probably be amazing through a classic ol' 4x12 cab.

Further to the above, I replaced one of the Celestion Golds in my 2x12 with a UK Celestion G12H 55hz. The result is much more pleasing to these ears. Kind of the best of both worlds. It made both the KT45 and the Route 66 sound better, a bit more cut and clarity.
I am now considering some new output tubes. Anyone have a particular preference for this amp? One option is the JJ's which are apparently pretty rugged. Alternatively some Svetlana reissues.

I think I would stick with the JJ EL34L for that extended low end definition that characterized the design.

I really miss my KT45! It is probably the most underrated Z amp out there. I would love to see the Doc release a half-power version, or one with a half-power switch. Maybe give it a new name, and give her another chance. Wonderful wonderful amp. A super platform for a pedalboard. Sweet cleans too!

I have a KT45, Z28 and an M12. They are all very similar in tone. I got the KT45 specifically because I wanted something close to the Z28 but with more power for my larger venue gigs.
Half power switch though - now I think you're onto something there.

I’d think the M12 would be a little closer to a half power version, at least tonally. The 6v6’s just seem more American voiced to me. I love my M12 with a 5v4. A little more wattage and drive/bite.

Howdy,
I want the KT-45 or the '66. Oh, to tune my LP Special to open G, break out my capo and launch into the opening salvos of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" through a 2-12 Z cab!

The M12 is on my short list. The KT and the RT have been super tempting for a long time, but the Z28 and Ghia are enough firepower for me.

With the 5AR4 in the rectifier position it is such a great full sounding amp. Tighter than a Ghia, inhales pedals. The Volume knob is very linear so the taper up and down works fantastically. IMHO everyone will catch on sooner or later to how great that amp is. Get one while they are cheap.
