I’ve had my convertible 1x12 cab (creamback) for a few weeks now and have mostly been using it closed. I always thought I preferred open back but I’m digging the punchiness of the closed back.
I’m curious to hear what you dudes prefer and why?
Thanks!

Open, seems fuller/warmer to me than closed. Place it 10” from a wall and it seems to spread about the room pretty good without seeming so direct.

I go back and forth....closed pushes more sound straight out front....Great for getting sound to the back of the room. Also seems to alter the highs a bit and maybe add mids/lows.
Open was more my first choice and filled up the air with a bit more sound....seems a bit more highs and more like my combo amp that I pair it with. Sometimes I prefer it closed(like lately)but mostly I’ve stuck with it being open.

Closed with V30s kind of works for a Marshall vibe. That combo really sounded good even clean with an LP.
In general, that isn’t what I go for. I’m open back and prefer an alnico variant for most things. I didn’t like the way my z1x12 sounded (creamback) until I took off the convertible panel. I’m not sure I need to find that panel again ever.

Kinda depends on the speaker in use, but I like the closed back on mine. I like the speedy recovery and control especially under drive.

Mine are both open. One I use with my Z-lux and the other with my Wreck. If I'm using the Remedy, I pull the Gold out of one, slap the Creamback in it and close her up! The Z-Lux and the Wreck sound better open backed and the Remedy sounds better closed. Hence the genius of the convertible cabinet!

I prefer open back cabs. When giging (indoors) the sound from the back helps fill the stage reducing the need to put it through the monitors. One more thing I control rather than the sound guy. I also like the way the sound coming of the back cancels out unnecessary low frequencies that only muddy up the type of music I tend to play. The only time I want a closed back cab is outdoors where I need that extra bottom.

I prefer open. The directionality of closed back cabs never works out for me. I find that open back cabs are way easier to control and get a fuller sound from than closed.

I've been using a Celestion Alnico Cream in a 1x12 cabinet with open back. I haven't tried it closed back. Though I'm not sure I need to try it closed. It sounds pretty awesome open. I'm also using a 2x10 open back cabinet, which sounds good too.
One benefit to open back is that our drummer can get some more volume from the guitar cabinets. I usually use two cabinets when gigging. I can always turn one to face the drummer, if he can't hear me. But some times he can hear me fine from the open backs.
