I recently added a bass guitar and some outboard gear to my home studio arsenal. Using an all-in-one recorder like the Tascam 2488 can be frustrating at times but its a good learning platform. This is a tune I learned from The Grateful Dead. It has 4 distinct rhythm guitar tracks and it was a challenge to get the mix right so that the parts felt balance and the mix still felt open. soundcloud.com/user-771304806/minglewood-blueshere's a video version with lower qlty audio

I like the mix; can identify the multiple guitar tracks. Your voice definitely has the Dead vibe.

Good groove. Good feel. The guitars do work pretty nicely against each other. I like the bass groove. Cool!

Here's a short one i was working on... i cut the tracks pretty quickly and wanted some vocals so i ad-libbed some nonsense, mixed it and it was done. the bass is a little squooshier and boomier than i'd hoped but i'm not inclined to go back and fix it as i'm never going to do anything with it. just a learning vehicle.. soundcloud.com/user-771304806/lies-lies-lies

when i get bored and don't have a new idea, i go back and find unfinished recordings to finish. here's one i found over the last weekend. not sure when i first recorded the original (4)tracks which were 2 rhythm on dobro, one cigar box uke track and an electric solo and a vocal track. i think i made it around 2015. so, i added the bass track and rerecorded the vocal. then i added the 2nd solo guitar while i recorded the video. the audio was a mixed down version i matched to the video in post editing.
not sure i got the mix quite right but i like the way the whole thing came out. the mask is for "context" so when i look back i can say ..."oh, yeah. i must have made that during covid". lol headphones and turn it up.

Sweet stuff Ian! Sounds like you are very Grateful, with no "wrongs" in the mix!

So, I didn't realize I listened to your original at the top of the thread in Feb '19 and commented until I scrolled up after listening to Minglewood again. I think I still have the same comment for that one. You have the guitars working nicely against/with each other. It's a cool vibe especially with your singing. And, overall, it's got a nice groove. Some of the best advice I got was from a former bass player who listened to some stuff and said "Think of your mix like a painting. You want to use the entire canvass. Spread out your sounds away from the middle and use your eq to carve out the different spaces." You've got a nice spread in the tune. I'll have to listen to the newer one later.

well, here is another tune i found which was incomplete. i had a lot of fun adding the bass, rerecording the vocal and remixing. again, i may have started it 8 or 9 years ago and left it be. i heard willie nelson record this song and i did a version of it in major and this incomplete version in minor. i like the feel a lot. soundcloud.com/user-771304806/heartbreak-hotel
