During a band hiatus, I decided to go back through some of my instructional DVDs. The first one is Hendrix, so I got out a Stratocaster and my Maz 18 MKII Reverb. I maxed the volume and just barely turned up the master and wow. With the guitar volume down, it nails the Hendrix clean tone and with the guitar volume up, the dirt. No pedals needed. All at wife friendly practice volume.

Stephen, I don't remember if you bought this Maz as a Mk. II version or if you had one converted. If it was the latter, can you talk about how much difference the upgrade made in doing the exercise?
I have several later production (but just before the Mk. II upgrade) Maz 18s and I always thought the MV was pretty darn good on them as they are. I don't mind paying the upgrade charge and freight both ways but I sure do hate shipping an amp!

Eddie, if yours are combos you can send just the chassis. I’m with you though, I sent mine in for the update and was gritting my teeth the whole time worrying about the shipping company destroying it. I used an old Z box and packing materials and it came back in a NEW Z box, like a new amp would. The update is worth every penny and the wait, and the worry. There are several good write ups here that we’re posted recently, Dave did one and someone else, can’t remember who.

My first Z was a 2012 Maz 18 NR. I sold it in 2016 because of its weight. I bought the MKII last year in a Studio Combo. The master volume on my MKII is much better than the one on my first Maz. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

There are several good write ups here that we’re posted recently, Dave did one and someone else, can’t remember who. Me? I think the upgrade/update was worth every penny.. I even went for the upgraded tubes (which cost extra). This is a new amp, but still a Maz 18. Bedroom practice is perfect now, with a lot more control of the volume. I've shipped about 60-70 amps over the past 12...... So, packing it up was not too stressful to me. Cost was about $40-$50 each way to ship. So, plan on about $100 for shipping (both ways). When it's returned from Z. it's packed like Fort Knox! Tips when packing it up... You'll pull the chassis (if a combo). Put some thick cardboard or a couple of regular cardboard on the bottom to protect the guts. Use a LOT of packing! Use a box with several inches of space on each side and a lot of packing (not just peanuts, those settle). I make my packed up amps to where the box will almost bounce if dropped. If I use peanuts, I put a layer of cardboard on top of them to hold them in place, then set my amp on the cardboard. If it's a head, still allow several inches of space on each side and pack it as full as you can get it with packing paper and styrofoam. The Dr. Z repair team will send you some packing tips as well.
