You can't go wrong. That is a good price as well. I would snag it before someone else does.

Z28 is a great amp and the price seems fair for a very nice condition RED amp!

Cool. Buying tonight. I'll post pics. Now I am on the hunt for a red 1x12 cab. Your pal, Tyler from Everett I found one on the gear page classifieds. The convertible cab is awesome. I have a WGS et-65 in there now paired with a 10 inch alnico gold in my 1x10 combo. Sounding great so far!

Plus, it has the gold face plate - which means it's an older one (nothing wrong with that!). For the price you can afford to do a bit of research and retube it if needed. Congrats on a great amp.

Yeah, I did some research and based on the SN I think it's the 21st Z 28 ever made, which is cool! It has JJ's in it for 6v6 (I generally dislike JJs) and a Tesla EF86. That's all I know from the seller so far. What do you recommend in place of the JJ's? To be fair, I have JJ's in my 1971 Deluxe Reverb and they're great. I've just had a lot of trouble with JJ's over the years. Mostly the EL84s either failing or making my amp sound like it's inside a pillowcase.

I’m using JJ 6V6s, Sovtek 5AR4 rectifier, and Winged C EF86 (because the Dario’s are impossible to find). I just retubed and set bias per Doc’s specs and the amp rocks like new.

Tubes are made in big batches. I know sometimes Doc changes the where the tubes come from that go into the amps. I remember back then that the JJ's of the time were much better than other 6V6's of the time. Ruby's were very popular then and the JJ's sounded much better to me.

Congratulations on your '28. I'd follow Roscoe's advice and give the current tubes a shot. I don't care for the JJs either and have gone back and forth between TAD and NOS RCAs for power tubes. The EF86 should be good. Good luck on the cab hunt. I have a ZBest I'm not using but I doubt you want to cover shipping from Chas,SC to Seattle.

Please let us know your thoughts on the 1x12 gold with the z-28 I may use the goldie for my Maz and a creamback for the Z28 because I have a feeling I'll need a tame the volume a bit. But, I've never had a goldie before, TBH. Honestly, I've only ever had one alnico speaker and it's a 70s JBL k120. It's in a 71 Deluxe Reverb.

You’d be better off using the creamback in the Maz to tame the highs and the gold in the z28 to bring out more high end/chime. The z28 is a darker amp compared to the Maz but then again everyone’s ears are different.

Best, Tyler from Everett I have a 10 inch gold in my 110 combo and it sounds great I can only imagine how great a 12 inch one would sound with the Z 28. There are reports that an alnico 12 inch speaker sounds great with the Z 28 as well

I'd start with the knobs at 3-3-3...then adjust from there. If you've never used an ef86 amp before, the dynamics will be different. It will take some getting used too. Remember, for the bass and treble knobs, they can add gain when cranked.
If the gold is loud...try a greenback. Lots of people settle on that speaker. (I know I did)
This amp really shines on stage at stage volume. This amp has bit more of a noticeable difference between bedroom and stage volume. I feel a lot of it's incredible dynamics are lost when playing at low volumes. Ya need to open it up.

It had a real vintage warm tone but I ended up going back to the greenback too. Like doc says it gives the amp more of a classic rock tone. And it does sound better when you crank it up.
