What I love about my Line 6 M5 is that it has vintage stuff that will get you 90% of the way there without breaking the bank. That's good for things you only need occasionally. It's EASY to navigate and saves the last settings automatically. Oh yeah, and it has KNOBS.
So I've been having fun with the Uni-Vibe model. Of all the effects I've owned I've never had one or even had a chance to play through one. I found a Fulltone Deja Vibe on the Guitar Center site for $100. They are supposed to be excellent reproductions. Of course I'll have $120 in it by the time it is delivered. Still, I couldn't resist. When you play through a Uni-Vibe they just seem to be so....organic.

Agreed! I've got an old original Sweet Sound UltraVibe. As far as I know, it's a direct clone of the original Uni-Vibe. They really do get that feel and swirly thump that the old ones have. I don't use it much, and every once in a while I think about selling it. Then I play it and decide that it's a keeper. Looking forward to your thoughts about it, Z!

That Pedal Show has featured the Deja Vibe quite a bit lately. It sounds great. Look forward to hearing your impressions.

Well this turned out to be a bust. The Deja Vibe was inop and I had to return it. The pilot light did not pulse no matter where the Speed knob was set and there was no signal. Being a tech type I could not resist looking inside with the hope it was something I could easily fix. Don't tell Guitar Center. The phenolic tab was broken off the intensity pot. Someone had been in there previously and been careless. Who knows what else they mucked up so I returned it to a store. I decided "what the heck" and ordered a new MK2 version. I too saw that Mick and Dan really like that one. They are on back order so I won't get it until some time in March. I will update then.
I'm pissed that GC sold this to me without testing it. It was obviously bad. Mostly because I had to make two trips to their store. Not my favorite place to go.

I ordered one from Sweetwater. I've never had anything less than an excellent experience with them. Note they are a retailer for Dr Z. I'm sure Dr. Z is selective about who sells his stuff.

I've also had great experiences with Sweetwater. Before moving to the Boss MD-500 I had the mini Deja Vibe (white unit, non-stereo) and it was FANTASTIC. If I ever go back to using individual modulation effects I'm definitely going to be getting one of the new ones. I just haven't come across a vibe that I liked nearly as much as those that Fulltone is putting out!

I have a Wilson Haze on my big board, love it, and it ain't going anywhere. That said, I'm revamping my small board, dont think I'll have room for another Haze. Fulltone started making a smaller one, and if it fits, im getting it. If it dont, I'll get the Drybell Vibe Machine which I know will fit.

Cool sounding pedal. Just listened to some clips. Is that the wah style or normal pedal enclosure?
I had a Dunlop roto-vibe in a wah enclosure that was pretty cool. Sold it here. I see the fulltone deja (wah style) has a sort of unusual I/O switch arrangement. But it sounds great from the demos I've heard.
I have a newer Dunlop univibe. It's ok. Nothing spectacular or addicting to it. I think I like that type pedal in a wah format. But I'm no univibe connoisseur.
Hope you like it

The one I have on order is a non-wah style. That unique switch placement looked to me to be too difficult to hit without paying close attention to your toes. Not something I could do while singing into a mic. Mine will have a jack for an expression pedal. That seems like a good feature. I like the option of being able to change speed with my foot while playing. I remember playing organ with a Leslie in a band for awhile and how expressive that was.

I really want one of these, too. I have a Strymon Moebius that covers (mostly) everything. The Vibe is especially excellent. The Flanger not as awesome, which is a shame, because it's otherwise amazing.
I had a Bearfoot FX Mint Green Mini Vibe which was also awesome, although technically speaking it's actually a harmonic trem.

That's what I was thinking too, about the funky switch placement. The speed knob on the one you ordered looks pretty big. Might be able to work it with your foot in a pinch. The exp pedal will be cool though.

The Mini Deja Vibe arrived this morning. If you are into the Trower/Gilmore type sounds you gotta have one. It has a better throb than what I was getting with the M5. I expected that for the price and am not disappointed. It is about the same size as a Strymon pedal like my Flint. Typical Fulltone build quality. They have gone to an SMD board.
It doesn't work with my Mission Engineering expression pedal. I'll have to sort that out. Mission makes several different pedals. Mine is specific to Line 6 stuff. Must not be compatible.
It's cool though. It likes my Strat best. No surprise there.

I owned at one time or another just about every uni-vibe clone out there. The ones that claim to be true to the circuit mostly are. There's only 13 signal components as i recall, not complex to recreate. What the big deal is the actual components themselves. In particular the light bulb and the photocells. That effects how the rise and fall is shaped. Bad clones have a very even perfectly round sounding sweep and either a weak or overly accentuated sounding thump or pulse that cuts in and out too abruptly at its apex when the intensity is turned up. That's the bulb and the voltage control nuances. The really great originals and some of the clones have this certain asymmetry and swing to them that is magical and mysterious, deep with a heartbeat that is just right. I currently own an original 69' Shin Ei Univibe that is a really strong benchmark example. Even the originals varied widely to component tolerances.
That being said the closest to my original that I've come across is the MJM Custom Shop 60's Vibe. It's not cheap but side by side it is a very acceptable travel friendly substitute for my original. He actually uses some vintage components in the custom shop version and the right bulb that nails the rise and fall. There are some that are a "take" on the original circuit, and some are cool and interesting but definitely a different flavor. Roger Mayer Voo-Doo vibe is one that sounds quite good in spite of not using the traditional photocell/light source circuit at all! I just found it to have too many variables and difficult to find the sweet spot. I also had one of the very earliest Deja Vibes ever built, bought it from Mike Fuller in the early mid 90's, the old unpainted Aluminum project box version. Serial # 50 something. I found that his working of the circuit back then anyway, was better for Trower than say Hendrix. A bit phasey'er sounding. My benchmark for Vibe is Machine Gun off of Band of Gypsy's, New Year's Eve 69', the first night of the two night recording. The depth of the vibe sound that night was off the charts, not to mention his Marshalls and modded Fuzz Face. Never heard Jimi equal the sounds he achieved that night. I like Deja's, sweetsound's, Prescription Vibe unit, Effectrode among others. To get really close the MJM custom, Heavens Vibe, Haze, KR Mega Vibe ( sketchy company tho?). .......

Good info. Besides the actual sound of the vibe, I considered a couple of other things when I chose the Fulltone. First was build quality and Mike Fuller is famous for that. The other was, since the vibe depends on a rather unique component, I wanted to be able to depend on availability of service from the manufacturer. Again, Fulltone fills that bill. I can't compare the current Mini Deja Vibe to any others out there. I just know I'm having fun with it.
