John called me and asked if I would build him a StangRay. He played two shows with Steve Miller and was impressed by Steve's set of StangRays. Of course I did, and John was amazed by the sound, said he played the head and 1x12 cab ( loaded with a Gold ) for 2 and half hours and wanted to let me know how much he loved it. I also built him a 2X12 open back cab loaded with a Blue and a Ceramic Creamback, by his request. I was surprised how good it sounded great with the Stingray head.
More to follow once I hear more.

Nice! The Stangray is the 'one that got away from me' I remember seeing Steve Miller a few years back and his sound was incredible.

As a long time owner of a Ray, none of this surprises me!

Mine got away from me too, but it was a matter of common sense given that it was just way too much amp for me to start with.
But the sound, the simplicity to get it dialed in, wow it was really special!
I guess until the Doc comes out with a version in a 1x10 Ghia sized format (HA!) my M12 will have to do.

I really enjoyed my Ray for the couple of years I owned it. Best non-Fender cleans I ever had. Congrats Doc.

The 'ray may not be for everyone...but what it does....it does GREAT.
...and if you're a newbie to the forum, when I say 'not for everyone', it means the Stangray is a very clean amp...and it's intended to be a clean amp. If you're a metal player, you probably wouldn't choose the Stangray. If you play clean jazz....you probably wouldn't choose a Boogie Dual Rectifier. Choose the right tool for the job.

Hmmm...maybe I should call and pretend to be John F That brings up a funny story Keith. First time John called, he said this is John Fogerty, I said RIGHT, who is this ? He said no I'm John Fogerty really. I was amazed , I told him I use to play " Proud Mary " in my mothers basement 50 some years ago, and now I'm on the phone with you, remarkable. Z

If he keeps it up, someday he'll make it! In all seriousness...The Ray is in a class all it's own, IMO! I love almost every EL84 amp Z makes, but the Ray is my absolute favorite amp in the world! I don't see how anyone, of any experience level, can deny that and NOT want one...Especially after playing one (or even being in the same room as one)

I swear if the Doc ever re-releases the Stangray (or X Ray, or whatever) in a head version, I'll have one. I kick myself for not getting one before they were discontinued.

Howdy,
I'm a British Invasion guy. My Carmen Ghia serves surprisingly well for such tones, but I'm hankering for my second Dr. Z amp and the Stangray is getting me worked up.
