I’m considering sending in my 2006 Maz 18 NR to be updated. The EQ bypass and MV mods seem like obvious choices, but I’m a little anxious about the “voicing” update. I’ve watched the Dr. Z video with examples of an older Maz 18 and a Mk II, but even so I find it hard to really determine whether or not I would like it.
Of course the best thing would be to try a Mk II out myself, but given where I live that’s probably not an option.
I’ve read through a few threads here and the consensus seems to be mostly positive. Any else who has had the Mk II “voicing” update done care to share what you thought of it?

Where do you live? You never know when someone here might be a neighbor Near Daytona Beach, FL. My Maz 18 is one of the older 2x10 combos. I’m not sure I’d get a good sense of the voicing difference unless I played the same configuration.

I was in the same boat... But, jumped in. I loved the voicing of the Maz 18, but everybody is raving about the Mk.II update, so I figured I'd do it. If I don't like it, I'm sure it'll be easy to trade for a Mk.I later down the line.
But, I'm not a big fan of reverb......But, I somehow ended up with a reverb model of the Maz 18. There are times I would like some reverb, when playing duo gig or "surf" song here and there, and the Mk.I Maz 18 didn't cut it when I wanted it. I think the new reverb will be worth it for me, for when I do want it?

My Maz 18 has been at the shop for three weeks. I'm so anxious to get it back. Don said it would be about 4 weeks. I'm so itchy I keep buying other gear. I'm going to be broke before the Maz comes come.

Got my amp back today. The Master is definitely a huge upgrade. I initially plugged into lo as I tend to do and was a little worried. I only had my Max for a short time, but it had some magic. In the lo input the mkii sounded good, not great. Stepped away, and when I plugged back in I went into the hi. Hello! Can’t wait to take a bunch of time tomorrow and run my board in to see all she can do.

It's a very impressive improvement to an already great amp...'specially the MV.

I've dial the bass way down, including on my preamp pedal's EQ. Any thoughts about how to dial this in better? I didn't have this issue prior to the upgrade, I also got a new tube set from the Dr while it was in. I spent a couple hours with it yesterday, less of an issue with humbuckers, really an issue with my Jazzmaster. I turned the volume way down on the amp, my preamp, and guitar, turned up the MV, but even thought the top end cleaned up nice, still muddy in the low end.

What speaker are you running in your Maz 18?

It’s the G12 and a great one at that in the combo. I also have a Z 210. I ran each one separately and together. Same issue regardless of speakers.

The G12H30? I've never had issues with loose bottom end in my 18NR Series II with that speaker, but lately I've been using a Gold in it with great results. Maybe shoot an email to Don at Z repair and see what he thinks. You may have a new tube that is bad. It happens.

It's not the speaker, the Maz sounded great before the mod through it, I've also run my Swarts through it and it is a huge improvement for that amp. Don had asked me to let him know how it was working. I want to run it a few more hours before I do. I was hoping I'm missing something with my settings now. They retubed the amp for me, so it could very well be a tube issue.

Okay, got it figured out. While the Maz was away I sold the KoT. That meant the Midnight 30 preamp was back on the board when the Maz returned. Really versatile pedal, I needed to adjust some of the switches to open up the bottom end. Now I need to just sit with the mkii upgrade and enjoy.
