I've always been happy with the tones of my Maz 18 and 38, both reverb heads. I always run them with JJ EL84s. The amps with 6N14Ns I've heard in the videos seem to sound more mid rangey, with less top end, and I don't like the idea of losing that chime if I pull the trigger on those tubes, but have I got this right? Also, I notice the Doc is still specifying JJs in the 38; are they still the best choice for that amp? Thanks.
I posted this in the tubes section, but thought this might get more hits!

I put the 6n14n's from Perry in my Maz18 2x10 combo. I felt it made the amp richer. It was a 03 or 04. I eventually traded it for a Z-Plus, but it was near impossible to let the Maz go I don't recall the exact power tubes I had in it prior to the 6n14n's but I have several extra JJ boxes in my stash. I went from slightly thinner less rich to very full and sumptuous. YMMV. Hope this helps.

I suppose for a quad of the 6n's would be chunk of change...my experience if the tubes are a go you're going to love em...I use them in my 18's...I have always looked and specified lower mid rating...which has a different "bloom" to notes...

I had an 18NR. When I put them in it made a noticeable, not a drastic, difference. Like j4gitr said richer, fuller even. And then reading posts here, I found the right combination, that worked for me, for the rest of the tubes. Then of course sold it. Could never really crank it up like it needed to be. But I'm an updated 8 owner now so all is right in the world again. I think Perry will sell a pair if you email him.

Hi Mickey My experience with Perry's 6n14n's is in a Maz 8, but I don't think you'll lose the chime by going to the Russian tubes. I bet a small adjustment of treble and cut control will probably give you the tone you're looking for. Perry rates these tube by a transconductance number. Lower Tc tubes will break up at a lower volume. And these tubes sound great when pushed to clipping. If you get your OD tone from a pedals and want maximum clean headroom, get a high Tc number. Perry can probably give you details on how Tc effects a Maz 18 better than I can. But these tubes have an excellent OD character when pushed hard. The other great thing about these tubes is how long they last. I put about 2600 hours on the one that came in my Maz 8. Good luck, I think you'll like them. BTW, Perry is a great guy to deal with. He takes good care of the Z community. Here's his Reverb page. (price is for a quad) reverb.com/item/3404159-nos-russian-6n14n-el84-power-tubes-quad-for-your-dr-z-trainwreck-1980-s
