I have to say the 6v6s and z12 sounds great. But i like to swap things around once in a while so put in 5881s and a tone tubby purple haze speaker... and it has a tighter sound and sounds great too. The PH does round off the highs just a bit which is really nice. Ill keep it like this for a while to break in the speaker and see but its great sounding already!! This tone tubby PH is NOT a dark sounding speaker like other tt speakers. Its much more open and articulate. Very happy so far!! The zlux is just a tonal playground!!! It has such a deep low end for a combo!! The only thing about the zlux is the reverb/trem noise. On mine its there at gig volume but not at lower settings. Ive heard this is normal, but my 1964 super reverb has reverb and trem, and no noise even cranked to the max.. Its just an audible hiss. I had a riviera club combo that hissed too. But sold that. The zlux is my favorite amp to date- im mainly from the fender blackface camp- But I just wish it didnt hiss at me!! Im thinking of pulling the tubes for thr reverb and trem and just use a pedal- or I may send it in for a check up- I dont think its a bad tube,, but we will see:)

I've tinkered with my Z-Lux a little, as well. At the end of the day, I kept the Z-12 speaker (and even bought another one as a backup), but I've permanently switched to 5881s. To my ear, they scoop the mids a little, but not too much, which I like, and give me a little less grind when cranked. About your reverb hiss, I'd really be willing to bet it's either a tube or cable issue. I had to swap a few different 6201s into V3 before I found one that was both quiet and gave me the sound I wanted. Cheers!

Im not overly concerned but i do like an amp to be as quite as it can! But yes the z12 is a great speaker I even like the 6v6s! I have the Cure as well so I figured id do the 5881s only problem perhaps is I swapped the tubes and speaker at the same time. It was great tone to great tone- I just have a thing for hempcones and this Purple Haze is wonderful!

I too went round the mountain with 5881 tubes a few years ago when I had a run of real bad luck with 6V6 tubes rattling. While I was at it I tried different speakers, and wound up back at completely stock with JJ6V6 output tubes and a Z-12 speaker. Love that amp. Especially since JJ got their act together with the rattle issue. That one about drove me nuts (er!). That reverb drive tube is super critical. I noticed big changes in tone when I tried different tubes there.

Yeah- I have a at7 in the v3. Ill buy the one recommend and see if it helps. I noticed you cant take any one tube out like on my fender, these tubes all work together.. I think this amp is awesome but if I could have this amp without the hiss I somehow would be so much happier! When im playing i never notice it but its just part of the beast. I dont think its just do to the reverb and trem, it seems more tied to the tone controls?? But im no expert!!

I'm thinking of the Z-Lux ro run with 5881's and a Z 4x10 with the Emi Z Legend option and wonder if the 5881's will help it out SRV/El-Mocambo the EZG? Not a lot of info on the Legend speakers but the 5881's in the Z-Lux seem to give it more of a big bottle Fendery vibe. I need to crap or get off the pot because I want one in Blonde!! Less than three weeks to decide. haha
PS, those NOS 6201's are very reasonable!
