I have been playing with Rats lately. I have a stock Rat and I like the tone once it is dialed in with an amp and guitar. I have a modded Rat as well and that is a little more organic and sounds great. Both pedals cost $50 and I modded one.
I don't know if anyone has pulled one out and revisited the tone after all of these years, but there are some great tones in those Rats.

Cool. I'm not all up on the different variations. The one I have is pretty cool. Sort of like a fuzz / OD. Need to plug it in. It's been a while. Just pulled it out of the closet. It's on deck for tomorrow...

Great timing. I was just thinking about taking mine off of the shelf to give it a try to see if it will make it onto a new board I am putting together. That was on my board (actually didn't have a board then , just a bunch of pedals strung together) for a big chunk of the mid 80s through the early 90s.

It is good timing! I put mine back in my board about three months back. It is from the early 90’s. Mainly have it at 8o’clock, 4-5 o’clock and just about maxed volume. Nice low grind!

Not that I am suggesting that you sell it, it's just interesting to see old gear that was cooler than we thought at the time.

As I was packing up the house for our move, I had to decide if it would stay or go. I kept it, and was unpacking the old pedals a couple of days ago. Will probably fire it up in the next couple of days. It's been around a long long time.

I freaking love my Keeley-modded "3-way" Rat, especially on its "Phat Rat" setting. Ever since I bought this thing and had it modded, there hasn't been a single high-gain or triple-recto type pedal that can't out-do it... and frankly I'm done searching anyway.

I sold my Rat several years ago, but you guys are right, they are fine sounding pedals. For many years, all I had was an 808 and a Rat.....boom. That was all I needed to cover a wide variety of tones.
I may have to look for one of the Keeley mod ones that Mark speaks of above!

I've got a couple like Nicholas' Rat. Early 90's RI I think...one of mine has a three way Monte Allums mod that puts LEDs in for clipping, and something else I can't remember. Rats can sound really cool.

The Boss SD-1 is next

Philip Ruetz developed a mod for the RAT that is very easy to DIY and provides a more versatile sweep. This was the result of a request from his late Uncle Ron and myself to do a bit of tinkering to get it to be more dynamic and touch sensitive and also maintain some low end. It is still referred to as the “Ruetz Mod” on the internet. Phil also did some work for Caroline effects on their Haymaker pedal. Check it out if you wish to tinker a bit, it’s easy to reverse if you want to. I think you just de-solder one end of the 47k ohm resistor on the board or clip it. You can do more variants of this which caps and switches but just keep it simple. Also, I do seem to remember it was easier to do on the USA made models. One of those Rats belonged to me and I sold it to Phil’s Uncle Ron. www.diyguitaramp.com/rat.html

I did the Ruetz mode on one of my pedals. What a small world Did you like it? I do like it quite well. At first it seemed like I had too much sweep but I have it dialed in now. I have an external POT for that control. It's pretty smooth but still narly. I don't really like the different gain structures, I found one that sounds organic and keep it there. I am also playing with a stock Rat and that is cool and easy to dial in. I may change the IC only and not add the Tri-Gain structure.
