Last week I did a comparison of my 3 Limited Edition Princetons. Doing an A/B comparison of some of my overdrives and boost pedals today at the studio. I'd like to see which one(s) will earn a place on my pedalboard. And what better amp to listen to them through but my Z-LUX as a clean platform. Any recommendations on pedals you guys like?

Nice stash! I've had 9 of those in the pic. The Angry Charlie is cool. Tried the @2 but liked the original A C better. I don't use OD pedals much. I can't explain why I have dozens of them tho lol. My all time favorite pedal is the Barber Direct Drive. It's pretty great.
It does a great JTM type tone, and can get about as nuts as the Angry Charlie. Sounds great w/ the JAZ. If I every buy another OD pedal, it will be a Barber Custom dual based on the Direct Drive. One side LG, the other HG.

Oh boy, I think I opened a can or worms here, and I'll tell you why. Many of these pedals reach the same territory, although with slight tonal variations. Much duplication.
Sorry Ian and Bob, I won't be adding any audio files because even with the naked ear, they're sounding so close, and I think an iPhone or other recording device wouldn't make a comparison any easier to distinguish or do them justice. The other factor here, is that I'm running them through a clean Z-LUX and a PRS DGT with humbuckers. I might get a completely different outcome with a Tele going through this amp or one of my Princetons or an EL84 amp.
I'll tell you one thing - I'm really jazzed by Josh Scott's AT and AT+.
Edit: And just to add here, I've never heard a better tone than through Whittington Tone Sausages!

I have owned or own many of these, and you are right Don, sonically they cross over each other quite a lot. Of those shown, I'd pick the Keeley mod BD-2 or the OCD. That Velvet Fuzz is the only fuzz I've owned that I got along with, but again, I had it set so it was almost like another OD.
I was also stoked to get the AT, but I returned it as I didn't care for it.
My current OD is a Prince of Tone. I only have one on my board now since the Nova has the OD function and the Cure has the EQ bypass.

hmm... I have a BD-2 which I always hated the sound of. I need to drag it out and try it again... and maybe put it up on the BST.

Oddly enough that pic resembles the control panel of a plane! But sometimes the journey is still nice if only the landscape appears to vary a little bit. We've all gone on that journey!

I'm not much of a fuzz guy so I have that new Velvet Fuzz up for sale as I do a few other pedals. I'd really like to give the PoT a listen too. Mike Piera (Analogman) is a friend of mine from my days in a Connecticut. I should stop by to see him next time I'm out there.

This is no offense to anyone here, because I am also guilty of this, but do you ever wonder if we're all nuts when it comes to this pedal thing. are we just suckers for all this, especially when it comes to overdrives? I listen to all my favorite things from the 60's and 70's, and love the tones, and they had little, if any pedals back then. I wish I had all the money back I've lost on pedals over the years. excuse me now, as I go on youtube and watch some pedal demo's!

I wish I had all the money back I've lost on pedals over the years. excuse me now, as I go on youtube and watch some pedal demo's! Yes! I hear ya! Recently I've been through a few dirt pedals and they were SO close that it made me step back. The amp I presently own (a non Z, I'm sorry to say) has a fantastic OD in it. I'm looking for a pedal that will give me a different flavor of OD than the amp can do. Not sure where I'm going to end up. Saw a video the other day for the Komet OD pedal (forgot what they call it, but it's four letters) and it seemed to sound pretty amazing and it also seemed very flexible. Which brings me to another point - some of the dirt pedals out these days have 8 knobs and three toggle switches. While it's cool to have that flexibility to find "your" tone, I tend to be a set it and forget it guy and I end up having this huge pedal with nineteen controls on it - to get one sound Another pedal I heard recently that seemed cool and different was the Wampler Velvet Fuzz. It seemed to straddle the world between Fuzz and OD.

Man, you have some tough choices there!! If it were me and for my playing style...I'd likely start off with a lower gain OD in front...the TS or BD-2. The Paisley can get some nice thick mid range that might serve well for some lead breaks. Something higher gain followed by the RC Booster at the end. There's so many possibilities with what you have to work with. I'd like to have all those pedals! haha!

Nice Don. I have owned or still own 7-8 of these pedals. I really like my JHS Angry Charlie(#20), @ Andy Timmons pedal, and OCD V1. The JHS morning Glory I used as a tone enhancement pedal(always on). It seemed to give a little extra sparkle to my other drives in front of it. Pedal placement( or order) can really change your tones especially when stacking pedals. These pedals would cover a lot of the same turf but they are worth mentioning. 1) Wampler Paisley Deluxe 2) Smiletone Governors Blues www.smiletoneaudio.com/index.html ***** (My friend in VA. Beach) 3) XTS Precision Drive www.xacttone.com/products/winford-drive.html4) XTS Winford Drive 5) Greer lightspeed. www.greeramps.com/collections/pedals/products/lightspeed

I've got quite a few of those pedals myself. I've always liked the Barber overdrives. With the 1/2 Gainer being my favorite.
I've been using using a Kingsley Harlot for the last few months and it sounds so good I might be done buying drives pedals. I know it's a tube pedal, so it's kind of in a different category.
I also use a RYRA Klone as a clean boost.

Don how did you like the Tumnus I second this question. I have the Tumnus Deluxe on my main board and love it! Was thinking about adding the smaller Tumnus to grab and go board. Thoughts on the RC Booster compared to the Tumnus?

Interested in what you think about the Morning Glory.... Its not as warm and dynamic as some of the other pedals. I found the Moonshine more usable.

The first time I played through a Timmy I disliked it. But the next time I did, different time and occasion, I loved it. It very well could have been the guitar and amp combination that I was using, or the room. Or quite frankly, my ears could have been tired the first time I heard it.

I have not cared for some pedals the first time I tried them. Then I played them later with a different amp and they worked fine. I learned that the combination, mostly of compression, of the two makes a difference. My Tim is the only pedal I have had that works well with ALL amps I have tried. My old Klon was good too but I always ran it with the gain off.
