Hi forum - long time original owner of a MAZ18NR combo from around 2010. Sadly I don't play enough, but think finally my tubes are failing? Every other time I warm up and take off standby the volume is VERY low and static-y. The sound returns OK if I strum a chord then go to standby.
Does this mean the tubes are failing, or is it possibly something else? Don't want to do any damage of course.
Thanks for any wisdom! I want to get back in action!

Larry,
If you haven't changed the tubes since 2010 then you could definitely benefit from new glass.
The description depicts an amp with weak tubes.
I would get the whole set including the rectifier. I would replace them in this order;
1. Rectifier a. Test the amp for power
2. Power Tubes from PerryR a. Test the amp
3. Pre-amp tubes a. Test the amp and jam. b. It will be like a brand new amp
Plan on about $150 in tubes.

Thanks, Purple-tele! That is a great help. I'll spring for new tubes. I see humbucker music sells sets by Z amp type. I appreciate it. It will take some time, but will post back how it all goes with the new tubes.

I would add that when you do your preamp tubes do them one at time, that way if there is a problem you know exactly what tube is causing it.
Also, even new tubes out of the box can be bad so buying from a reputable dealer is very important

I have had the same issue twice so far. Different amps but both times it was bad tubes. In my case power tubes.

Yeah, the power tubes work the hardest and normally go out first. Preamp tubes (good ones) last thousands of hours.

You could have one or more bad electrolytic caps. 15 years is sort of the life expectancy of these caps and they can go bad in amps that sit unused for long periods.

Hi all - UPDATE! The new tubes (from Perry) did the trick and the amp is back in action. I'm now considering the Master Volume update in the new year to lower the volume for living room play!

The update will transform your amp from an already really good amp into a great amp. I can't recommend it enough.
